What are the responsibilities and job description for the Athletic Trainer position at Muskegon Lumberjacks?
The Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) are seeking an Athletic Trainer for the 2025-26 season. The Athletic Trainer will play a key role in developing elite athletes who are committed to excellence on and off the ice. This position requires extensive interaction with coaches, staff, players, and other rink personnel. The Athletic Trainer is expected to provide medical services at all practices and games, both home and away. The position would be effective immediately.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate all medical services and provide day-to-day coverage for a Tier I Junior hockey team.
- Responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of all injuries and illnesses under the direction of team physicians and other medical professionals as needed.
- Update and communicate with the Coaching Staff regarding player injuries, conditions, and recovery status.
- Communicate and coordinate with team medical personnel to ensure proper care for the health and well-being of all athletes.
- Assist in or direct the strength and conditioning program in conjunction with the coaching staff.
- Maintain accurate records of athletes’ conditions, treatments, and rehabilitation plans.
- Implement USHL policies related to concussion protocols and drug testing programs.
- Manage insurance filings and documentation related to player injuries.
- Handle inventory, ordering, maintenance, and restocking of medical and training supplies.
- Assist with game-day preparation in collaboration with the equipment staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop and maintain positive, respectful relationships within the Muskegon Lumberjacks organization.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel internationally as required.
- Must successfully complete a full background check.
ABILITIES & SKILLS:
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with management, league officials, facility representatives, and team staff.
- Familiarity with standard athletic training equipment, including but not limited to modalities, hot and cold therapy, and soft tissue care.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems independently.
- Thrive in a high-intensity, competitive, and deadline-driven environment.
- Understand, adhere to, and enforce safety protocols.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, etc.).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or a related field from an accredited university (Master’s degree preferred).
- Certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) and Board of Certification (BOC).
- At least one year of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer, preferably with hockey-related experience.
- First Responder & Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Michigan.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
