Description of Work
A Juvenile Detention Officer (JDO) provides direct care to juveniles detained in the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center (MCJDC). JDO's provide facility security through ongoing supervision of juveniles. An employee in this class instructs and supervises juveniles in vocational, academic, recreational, and daily personal hygiene activities and maintains accurate records of juvenile behavior.
Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications
1. Have completed thirty (30) semester hours of college-level course work from an accredited college or university (or equivalent quarter hours); preferably in one of the following disciplines Criminal Justice, Human Service, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Child Development, Corrections, or related field; OR
Have a High School Diploma / GED AND a minimum of 2 years demonstrated work experience in a juvenile facility, Child Caring Institution (CCI) or other Department of Child Welfare Licensed facility or a minimum of 2 years demonstrated work experience with youth ages 10 - 18 years old.
2. Possess a valid Michigan Driver's License.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Employees in this class shall be in good physical condition to withstand physical and verbal confrontation with youth and may be required to move or lift youth weighing in excess of one-hundred (100) pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employees in this class generally work inside and outdoors at the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center.

EVALUATION CONTENT
The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system. For each opening, the Department Head has her / his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
