Position Summary
The Accounting Manager – Corporate & Development oversees accounting functions for corporate operations and development projects, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across multiple entities. This position supervises 1-3 accounting staff, conducts weekly one-on-one meetings, performs annual performance reviews, and approves timesheets. The Accounting Manager is responsible for accounts payable, financial reporting, intercompany transactions, payroll postings, reconciliations, audits, tax return coordination, and construction draw processes while working closely with internal and external stakeholders. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise and mentor a team of 1-3 accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
- Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings to monitor progress, provide coaching, and ensure workflow efficiency.
- Perform annual performance reviews and assist in professional development planning.
- Approve timesheets and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
Financial Reporting, Audits & Tax Compliance
- Oversee the preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations and financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Manage the annual consolidated audit, coordinating with external auditors and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
- Review and coordinate corporate tax returns, including 990s, 1099’s, and charitable trusts.
- Responsible for quarterly affiliated account consolidation checks, ensuring accuracy and compliance across entities.
Accounts Payable, Vendor Management & Intercompany Transactions
- Oversee all accounts payable processing and payments across corporate, development, and property operations.
- Manage vendor setup, including validating insurance requirements and ensuring compliance with organizational policies.
- Manage intercompany cash movements, ensuring accurate tracking and reconciliations.
Construction & Development Accounting
- Coordinate construction draws with Housing Development, ensuring accurate and timely funding.
- Post construction closing statements to ensure proper accounting for new developments.
- Work with Housing Development on cost certifications required for LIHTC construction deals, ensuring compliance with tax credit financing requirements.
Payroll & Reconciliations
- Post payroll for both Mutual Housing California (MHC) and Mutual Housing Management (MHM), including allocations to operating properties as needed.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations for MHC and MHM.
- Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations for MHC and MHM.
- Perform quarterly balance sheet reconciliations for other affiliated entities.
Budgeting & Cash Flow Management
- Assist with the corporate budget process for MHC and MHM, working with CFO to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Monitor and project intercompany cash flows to support efficient financial operations.
Collaboration & Cross-Departmental Coordination
- Work collaboratively with the Accounting Manager, Property Operations to align financial processes across corporate, development, and property operations.
- Support the transition of properties from construction to operations, ensuring proper accounting for loan conversions and stabilization funding.
- Coordinate with Housing Development and Asset Management teams on financial reporting, draws, and compliance requirements.
Process Improvement & Other Duties
- Ensure adherence to internal financial policies and recommend process improvements for efficiency and accuracy.
- Maintain compliance with company policies, offering suggested changes to enhance efficiency.
- Other duties as assigned, supporting the broader goals of the organization.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education, training, and lived experience in accounting or financial management may be considered in place of a degree.
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, audits, budgeting, construction accounting, intercompany transactions, and tax return coordination.
- Experience in property management, real estate, nonprofit, or affordable housing accounting is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems; experience with property management financial software is a plus.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage priorities, workflow, and multiple deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- A customer service mindset and ability to work collaboratively across departments.
- Initiative-driven and capable of working independently.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Primarily office-based with occasional travel to housing sites or community locations.
