Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Marine Research Associate to join our team at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research and monitoring of recreational fisheries throughout Monroe County.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fish morphology, identification of marine fishes to species, and statistical survey sampling methods. Additionally, they will possess excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and be able to work under adverse conditions. The selected candidate will also have access to facilities at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute field station in Marathon, FL, and frequent day-time travel throughout Monroe County is required.
As a Marine Research Associate, you will be working on directed research and monitoring of recreational fisheries, including conducting dockside interviews with recreational anglers to gather data on catch rates, effort, gear and area fished. You will also be responsible for sampling marine fish dockside to collect accurate length and weight measurements as well as biological samples for age, growth and reproduction. Other duties may include processing field and laboratory samples following standardized protocols, conducting data entry using personal computers and database software, reviewing data for quality assurance, and participation in public outreach efforts as appropriate.
