Job Description
This position requires 4 years of professional experience in a biological field or laboratory program. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences can substitute for the required experience.
Preference is given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in a biological science or direct knowledge of fisheries, experience identifying finfish to species, or relevant experience working in marine fisheries monitoring programs.
Responsibilities
- Conduct directed research and monitoring of recreational fisheries throughout Monroe County.
- Assist with new and ongoing marine recreational fishing surveys.
- Collect data on catch rates, effort, gear, and area fished through dockside interviews with recreational anglers.
- Sampling marine fish dockside to collect accurate length and weight measurements as well as biological samples for age, growth, and reproduction.
- Process field and laboratory samples following standardized protocols.
- Enter data using personal computers and database software.
- Review data for quality assurance.
- Participate in public outreach efforts as appropriate.
- Perform other duties related to program and facility functions.
Requirements
- Knowledge of fish morphology and identification of marine fishes to species.
- Familiarity with statistical survey sampling methods and data collection.
- Able to maintain field sampling equipment and operate a computer with software such as spreadsheets and word processing.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
- Able to work under adverse conditions, lift up to 25lbs (occasionally up to 50lbs).
- Maintain a valid driver's license and work long hours early in the morning and late at night, including weekends and holidays as needed.
