Title: Health Educator
Reports to: Director of Education
JOB SUMMARY
The Health Educator is responsible for planning and providing educational presentations to schools and community groups. The Health Educator will use evidence-informed curriculum and appropriate strategies and methods that support young people in making healthy and well-informed decisions. Topics the Health Educator will be presenting include, but are not limited to abstinence, contraception, safer sex, healthy relationships, intimacy and consent, stress management, sexually transmitted infections, sexual decision making, and puberty.
This is a full-time position, with some hours extending into the evening and an occasional weekend event.
EDUCATION TEAM
We engage community education holistically, utilizing both trauma-informed and positive youth development approaches when working with young people and community partners in order to support and establish safe learning environments, healthy decision-making, engaged youth and supportive families.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Facilitate ongoing health education presentations and youth development groups for students, young adults and parents, in schools and other youth serving organizations; educational presentations are off-site and travel is required
- Develop, adapt and revise, as needed, programming, materials and activities with an emphasis on utilizing evidence-based curriculum
- Contact and consult local schools and other youth serving organizations to coordinate the scheduling of presentations
- Complete education logs for every presentation, keeping accurate compilations of statistical data for reporting
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in youth development, social work, sociology, psychology, women and gender studies, public health, education, nursing OR extensive (2 years) volunteer and/or teaching experience with preteens, teens and/or young adults.
- Minimum of one year experience in classroom instruction or program facilitation, working with young people grades 5 – 12.
- Ability to travel extensively, primarily in the West Metro, to teach at multiple sites per week.
- Ability to work flexible hours including during and after school, potentially evenings and occasionally weekends.
- Ability to foster diversity and open communication within teams and programs.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from a variety of economically, socially and culturally diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other educators, clinic staff, volunteers and community members.
- Strong verbal and communication skills.
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a high performing team.
- Technical proficiency in Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Commitment to the mission, vision and core values of myHealth.
Preferred:
- Bilingual; Spanish speaking a plus.
- Previous work with young people with special needs.
- Experience and confidence in speaking in front of large groups of people.
- Experience in non-profit sector, community education, reproductive healthcare or adolescent issues.
- Knowledge of the stages of youth development and positive approaches to behavior management.
REQUIRED LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
- Must have valid MN driver’s license, car insurance and access to a vehicle.
- Must complete Mantoux testing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental/Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily off-site at schools and community sites in the West Metro.
Physical Demands: May require occasional lifting of supplies and equipment of up to 50 lbs.
