Description:
Myrtle Beach State Park is the first of 48 parks in the state of South Carolina, located in Myrtle Beach, SC. This is a paid developmental state park ranger position for the South Carolina State Park Service. As an Apprentice Ranger, you will assist park staff with a wide range of duties, focusing on visitor safety, rule enforcement, and emergency response, while helping to conserve the park’s natural and cultural resources. This hands-on position provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in careers in park management and natural resource protection and is a great entry into a potential career as a state park ranger. This position will primarily focus on the administration, maintenance, and groundskeeping of Myrtle Beach State Park. This involves, but is not limited to, making reservations, accounting, opening and closing park facilities, facility and vehicle maintenance, and landscaping/groundskeeping. There is a heavy focus on providing all park visitors with a quality customer service experience while visiting the park to enhance their visit. Other positions and duties may become available as the employee shows potential and interest.
Responsibilities include:
- Enforce park rules and regulations to ensure visitor safety and protect park resources
- Responding to emergencies, including first aid and other emergency situations, as directed by senior rangers.
- Patrol park to monitor for policy/rule violations and potential hazards
- Provide information and assistance to park visitors, including directions, park rules, and recreational opportunities
- Assisting with crowd control
- Collects, and accounts for revenue and produces required reports.
- Assists with reservations for rental facilities
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance tasks on grounds, buildings, equipment and vehicles to meet established standards
- Manages assigned, specific operations to include public use areas, retail operations, and facilities management
- Assists in the control of inventory of equipment, supplies, and retail items by issues, use, and counts; completes data reports
- Practices and promotes teamwork within the State Park Service, throughout the agency, and with external agency stakeholders
Position Requirements:
- Passion for protecting natural resources.
- Strong communication skills and an ability to interact with visitors in a professional manner.
- Strong conflict management skills to handle difficult situations with visitors or other individuals encountered in the park
- Exposure to all weather conditions, cleaning agents, and other materials used in maintaining park facilities and grounds
- Must be 18 years or older, with a high school diploma or equivalent (college coursework in criminal justice, law enforcement, environmental sciences or related fields is a plus).
- Light to medium lifting, walking and standing on uneven terrain, and sitting at a register for extended time
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings as needed.
- A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.
