Purpose of Position :
To assist in the management of the Boathouse operation in season
Essential Functions :
The Boathouse Assistant Manager is responsible for the daily functions of the Boathouse when Boathouse Supervisor is off, including management of staff and volunteers. The Boathouse is open to the public during late spring through mid-fall to provide Museum visitors a hands-on experience in traditional wooden craft.
Daily operation of the livery service includes opening The Boathouse prior to staff and volunteers' arrival and lock up at end of day. Setup of the watch rotation for staff and volunteers for the day as well as being the primary assist boat driver during daily operation. Keeping an eye on the ever-changing conditions on the water and making sound judgment calls about visitor sailing capabilities, weather, including when to suspend sailing craft, and in adverse conditions to all, suspend boathouse offerings. This will include reaching out to Junior Volunteer guardians to arrange pickup and communicate with the Museum’s front desk so incoming guests can be alerted to the boathouses closed status
Requirements : Qualifications :
- CT Safe Boaters Certificate (equivalent NASBLA cert.) or desire to obtain before start date.
- Personnel leadership and management, administrative skills, substantial boat handling skills and the ability and desire to teach those boating skills along with good seamanship are all needed attributes.
- Public speaking, customer service and positive visitor interaction
- 18 years of age is required
Due to the nature of the work involved, the incumbent interacts with a broad range of individuals including fellow staff, visitors, volunteers, trustees, vendors, etc. In all of these interactions, the reputation of Mystic Seaport Museum and the Watercraft Area are at stake. It is essential therefore that a high degree of professionalism be exhibited at all times.
