Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a seasonal, full-time, experienced cook / deckhand to manage the galley, provisioning and preparation of 3 meals a day for up to 12 people during our 10 week summer youth sailing program aboard the beautiful Schooner Brilliant . Brilliant operates as a sail training vessel for 15-18 year old students upon the waters of southern New England. The cook / deckhand works closely with the captain and mate to run a safe, educational, and fun liveaboard sailing program. This position requires participation in emergency drills and some participation in on deck activities throughout the day at the discretion of the captain. Sailing trips will last between five and ten days.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Provide 3 meals and snacks / day for participants and crew, to be accomplished with the involvement of program participants.
Prepare meals using accepted safe food handling practices to accepted safe food handling standards.
Provision the galley with food and needed supplies on a regular basis.
Maintain galley in clean and orderly manner, to be accomplished with the involvement of program participants.
Manage the galley budget and turn in receipts as requested by Captain.
Assist on deck during vessel operations when requested by the Captain or Mate.
This is a temporary, live-aboard position from the end of June 2025 through August 2025.
Requirements :
Candidate must be able to provision for and cook basic healthy home style meals in a moving and changing environment.
Candidate must be able to interact and lead program participants in ships activities.
Candidate must have underway experience on power or sailing vessel.
Sailing experience is desirable but not necessary.
Training in First aid and CPR is desirable but not necessary.
CT Safe Boating Certificate or USCG 6 Passenger license or greater is desirable but not necessary.
Candidate must have drivers license.
Willingness to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and for extended periods of time, as Brilliant operates on a varying schedule of 1 - 10 day sails. Position often requires 12 hour days.
Must be able to load, unload, and store galley supplies unassisted from floats, docks, and other vessels.
Must be able to access Brilliant from floats, docks, and other vessels.
Must be fit and able to live and work in a close environment, and to assist crew in the operation of the vessel.
There are times when the applicant may be requested to assist in projects outside the normal scope of work within limits set by the supervisor.
Due to the nature of the work involved, the incumbent interacts with a broad range of individuals including fellow staff, visitors, volunteers, trustees, vendors, etc. In all of these interactions, the reputation of Mystic Seaport Museum and the Watercraft Area are at stake. It is essential therefore that a high degree of professionalism be exhibited at all times.
The nature of the work involved requires extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions during the spring, summer and fall seasons.
Pre-employment USCG drug test and enrollment in the Museum's random pool is mandatory.
