SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
This position provides hands-on engaging activities for students, scouts, and other groups during both day, overnight, afterschool, and summer programs. Educators provide programming infused with positive youth development principles for school field trips, afterschool and homeschool programs, overnight programs, and summer programming. The overnight programs include the requirement to sleep onboard our full-rigged historic training vessel the Joseph Conrad. This position will include working some weekends on an as-needed basis. During the months of April-November this position is at least 25-35 hours per week; during the months of December-March this position is 15-20 hours per week.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide the highest quality dynamic educational programming using positive youth developmental techniques.
- Lead tours, afterschool, homeschool, overnight, and school programs using experiential education methods.
- Supervise guests overnight on board the vessel Joseph Conrad.
- Assist with rigging climbing.
- Assist with cleaning of program facilities.
- Provide excellent customer service and excellent visitor experiences.
- Build a professional repertoire through continuous growth and mastery of content, skills, hands-on education, presentation and delivery techniques.
- Contribute to the development of new programs and enhancement of existing programs.
- Help advance department and institutional goals, adhere to mission, and serve as ambassador for Mystic Seaport Museum.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must enjoy working with youth and have a positive attitude.
- Experience working with children and youth in formal or informal settings; ability to engage students in a dynamic and energetic manner.
- Knowledge of and/or willingness to learn positive youth development principles and techniques.
- Demonstrate caring and respectful attitude towards children, youth, and families.
- Ability to lead education tours of the Museum, indoor/outdoor games and crafts, climb the rigging.
- Self-directed learning, ability to retain learned information, and use of knowledge to engage audiences of all ages and learning styles.
- Flexibility, versatility, and adaptability.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Must possess and reflect a polished professional demeanor in a variety of situations.
- Background in youth development, museum education, and/or experiential education is preferred.
- Willingness to work a highly flexible schedule corresponding to the needs of the Museum.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
- Deliver programs in venues that can be cold, wet, hot, or dirty; work outside in all weather.
- Late nights, early mornings, overnight on the Joseph Conrad.
