Reading Specialist (Grades K–8)
11-Month Position
Position Summary:
Mystic Valley Regional Charter School is seeking a skilled and dedicated Reading Specialist to lead its Reading Intervention program under the direct supervision of the Assistant Directors (K–8). In alignment with the Board of Trustees’ policies, the Reading Specialist will support primarily Grades K–6 (with potential extension through Grade 8), working closely with students identified as at-risk or reading below grade level. This role is critical to helping students achieve reading and language proficiency through data-driven instruction and targeted intervention strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary contact for families of students identified as at risk in reading and/or language acquisition, enrolling students into the Reading Intervention program as needed.
Collaborate regularly with classroom teachers and fellow Reading Specialists to ensure instructional consistency and alignment with school-wide curriculum standards.
Implement Direct Instruction (DI) programs as the primary mode of intervention whenever possible. In cases where DI is not applicable due to grade level or content, maintain strict adherence to school-approved programs that align with Core Knowledge and refrain from introducing unapproved materials.
Deliver daily small-group or one-on-one reading instruction to students identified for intervention, following a schedule provided by August 15 each year.
Continually monitor and assess student progress, expanding services to newly identified or enrolled students as needed throughout the year.
Prepare quarterly progress reports to accompany student report cards, clearly communicating individual student growth to parents and guardians.
Participate in parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress and intervention strategies.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Directors to support the school’s academic operations.
Qualifications:
A minimum of three years of experience in a similar reading intervention or specialist role is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to follow and uphold school policies, instructional models, and established processes.
Excellent organizational and planning skills with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Effective problem-solving and data analysis capabilities to guide instruction.
Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a commitment to working as part of a team.
