Job Description
Plant Engineer- Maintenance Lead, Food Production Facility
The N.K. Hurst Company is a 3rd & 4th generation family owned and operated food company distributing products throughout the United States from our plant in Zionsville, IN. We are looking for a full-time Plant Engineer.

Primary Duties:
This position reports directly to the Plant Manager and works in close collaboration with ownership.
Perform and coordinate maintenance on all production, warehouse, and plant equipment.
Assist plant manager to complete any production, warehouse, and plant duties.
Implement NKH preventative maintenance program
N.K. Hurst is a seasonal business with production demands higher from roughly September through February
when 48 hour production weeks are the norm. Shifts during this period are generally Monday-Thursday 7:00am-5:30pm, and Fridays 7:00am-3:30pm.
During the “slower” season, the typical production schedule runs 4 days a week, 10hr shifts, with the remaining schedule available for maintenance and other projects.
It is expected that the Plant Engineer is available during production hours, and coordinate their schedule with the plant manager such that there is always senior supervision on site and available to the needs of N.K. Hurst’s production and warehouse teams.
Education/Experience Requirements
3-5 years of relevant experience preferred
Required skills and job functions:
Maintenance on food production, warehouse, and all plant equipment, including:
Maintenance of automation systems including:
Manage and lead production & warehouse employees as needed
Identify weakness & inefficiency in production and warehouse operations/equipment and implementcorrective actions on a schedule
Strong ability to communicate with co-workers and upper management
Comply with and enforce all company food safety/quality requirements (GMP, SQF, HACCP).
Strong core computer skills, ability to utilize PM program software and learn SAP Business One
Strong Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) Computer Skills Preferred
Fluent in spoken and written English (Spanish a bonus)
Must be able to work flexible hours to assist in 2nd shift and weekend needs (seasonal)
Food Industry Experience Preferred
Physical Demands & Requirements
Regularly involves sitting, standing, walking, climbing of stairs.
Regularly involves crouching, stooping, kneeling and/or climbing or balancing.
Must be able to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds
Willing to work on elevated surfaces

- Stand-up bagger/ pre-made pouches
- Volumetric cup fillers
- Bulk material handling (bucket elevators, belt conveyors, feeders, diverter valves, storage bins, screening, pneumatic conveying)
- X-Ray (bulk and end-of-line)
- Pallet trucks/jacks/lifts
- Knowledge of plant utility including air handling/ compressors, water, electric
- Stick pack
Maintenance of automation systems including:
- Robotic palletizing
- Conveying
- Case packing
- Pick and place
Manage and lead production & warehouse employees as needed
Identify weakness & inefficiency in production and warehouse operations/equipment and implementcorrective actions on a schedule
