POSITION SUMMARY
The Planned Giving Officer plans and implements strategies and activities to meet the long-term goal of building NAACP’s endowment through planned gifts, as well as raising current support for general operations, NAACP’s time-bound advocacy campaigns, and other special initiatives. The Planned Giving Officer meets with donors and prospects to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward planned gifts, working as part of a collaborative team across the Development Department. This position reports to the Vice President, Individual Giving and also works alongside the Principal Gift Officer for activities related to NAACP’s comprehensive campaign and principal and major gifts program. As much time as possible is expected to be spent visiting with, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors and prospects.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
- Identify, cultivate and solicit prospects for bequests and other planned gifts;
- With external vendor(s), plan and conduct outreach program for planned gifts through direct mail, newsletters, advertisements, and the website;
- Conduct personal visits with donors with a goal of identifying planned gift prospects and of maintaining a portfolio of at least 125-150 donors and prospects;
- Interact with prospective donors and their financial counsel;
- Evaluate individual donor's financial circumstances;
- Utilize planned giving software to create and present gift proposals that suggest options for donors to accomplish their financial and philanthropic objectives;
- Prepare gift annuity contracts and acknowledgments and coordinate the administration of planned gifts;
- Monitor the estate settlement process and acknowledge all estate gifts;
- Conduct wills and estate planning seminars;
- Develop and maintain knowledge of federal, state, and local tax and legal issues related to charitable giving;
- With prospect research manager, analyze demographic and psychographic data to determine the most appropriate prospects within the donor base and community for planned gifts;
- Manage outside vendor services connected with planned giving;
- Compose creative, persuasive letters and other materials with input from the Vice President, Individual Philanthropy, Chief Strategy Officer, and Chief Communications Officer;
- Conduct program tours and receptions for donors and friends;
- Participate in donor cultivation events;
- Maintain deep knowledge of NAACP programs and activities;
- Attend NAACP events as requested; and
- Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the Vice President, Individual Giving or designees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Educational/Professional Experience
- Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years of development, marketing, accounting, financial planning or legal experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge of planned giving techniques and the tax implications of charitable giving as they affect outright gifs, retained life income gifts, and a gift by will is preferred;
- An understanding of financial planning and estate planning principles is highly desired, as is an ability to use planned giving software and other technical resources in creating gift proposals that maximize estate resources;
- Experience in relationship management with extensive knowledge of volunteer management and donor cultivation and stewardship as well as experience closing 7- and 8- figure gifts from first-time donors (not just renewals and upgrades);
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills and ability to prioritize and execute responsibilities in the face of conflicting priorities;
- Personal qualities of strong work ethic, emotional intelligence, and diligence;
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive culture;
- A demonstrated style of collaborative leadership in working with senior executives, peers, and staff;
- Desire to work in an environment of consensus-based decision making and cross-disciplinary cooperation;
- Proven experience in -- and a personal passion for -- building effective, collaborative teams that achieve financial goals in sustainable, ethical ways; and
- Extensive Salesforce management experience.
