Admissions Officer
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Dean of Enrollment Management, the Admissions Officer(s) will work closely with the Director of Admissions and other members of the admissions leadership team to execute strategies that support application growth and enrollment of talented and qualified students to Barnard.
Job Description
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Participate in the recruitment process, both virtually and in-person. May include domestic travel to meet with prospective students, their families and college counselors, community-based organizations (CBOs), and representing Barnard at college fairs and panels to give public presentations about Barnard’s academic programs and resources, admission and financial aid policies and procedures. Analyze visits and compose written reports.
- Reads and evaluates first-year and transfer admission applications submitted by prospective students from a regional territory in order to assess the students’ match with Barnard. Participates in the admissions committee discussion of applicants by presenting qualified candidates and providing regional and contextual expertise.
- Conduct group information sessions, in-person and virtually, to provide an overview of the College and answer specific questions
- Participates in open houses and spring yield events, in-person and virtually, managing logistical and programmatic tasks as directed
- Correspond with prospective students, applicants, College alumnae, guidance counselors, and others seeking information on admissions policies, academic and non-academic programs and student activities in writing and via social media platforms.
- May assist in other project areas including: events, on-campus/virtual campus visits, communications, alumnae engagement, assistance with scholars’ programs, etc.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated excellence in communication and presentation skills
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information and material in a discretionary manner.
- Capacity to relate easily, effectively, and appropriately with people from widely diverse backgrounds and circumstances; commitment to advancing diversity awareness and inclusion
- High degree of accuracy and ability to absorb detail
- Ability to exercise sound judgment while working collegially in a high pressure, deadline-driven environment
- Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a team
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear and convincing manner
- Good counseling and listening skills
- Ability to handle own correspondence
- Willingness and ability to work weekends and extended hours, at various times of the year and travel for up to two weeks at a time.
- Understanding of issues facing admissions and higher education
- Understanding of the values of a liberal arts education for women and the ability to articulate them effectively.
- B.A. degree from a liberal arts college
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications including Word, Excel & Power Point
- Valid driver’s license
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
