School Librarian/Media Specialist
About Montessori International Childrens House
Montessori International Childrens House (MICH) is an AMI accredited school serving children from 18 months through age 12 that has created an idyllic setting for young learners in its 40-year history. Situated on a verdant, wooded campus, and with a highly dedicated faculty and staff, the school community has a clear sense of purpose: to provide the best, age-appropriate education for young learners, following the philosophy of Maria Montessori.
Position Summary
The Librarian/Media Specialist manages the in-school library education program and is responsible for the successful implementation of the program.. They will be responsible for managing the library book collection along with all student facing technology. Successful candidates will have a demonstrable track record of developing programs that empower students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information. The best candidate will have a true love for working with primary and elementary aged children.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Program Delivery
- Plan lessons and curriculum for library classes for children ages 3-12
- Develop, organize and coordinate at least three school-wide library activities per academic year
- Plans, organizes, and implements annual events related to the library and other literacy initiatives.
- Oversee technology maintenance, library collection organization
- Organize, track and store desktops, Chromebooks and technology equipment (LCD projectors, visualizers)
- Maintain the circulation system for all library materials, including check-out card maintenance and an accurate system of overdue notices, and the librarys cataloging system
- Organizes and maintains periodical subscriptions
- Assist Education Director in recording Parent Education meetings and other cultural/school events
- Schedule library class schedules with the Educational Director
- Collaborate with teaching staff to create dynamic curriculum that suits different age groups
- Meet with the Parent Teacher Organization to provide program and organizational updates
- Maintain ongoing relationships with local public librarians and community service professionals who provide occasional services to the library
- Supervise parent and student volunteers and interns who may be in teaching classes and with library maintenance
- Train, monitor, and schedule library volunteers as needed
- Keep accurate attendance records and evaluations of classes and curriculum taught and share results with teachers
- Issue correspondence related to the school library, including thank you notes for donated items, and volunteer services
Required Skills And Experience
- Strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with mission and vision of school.
- Be proficient in basic office computer skills, including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs.
- Bachelor's degree strongly preferred, Master's degree or the equivalent in Library Studies preferred
- Knowledge of Montessori Pedagogy preferred
- Minimum of one-year teaching or library experience with preschool and elementary-aged children.
- Strong relationship building skills and ability to communicate effectively with teachers
- Openness to feedback, desire to continue development as a professional, and willingness to take responsibility for programmatic outcomes and achievement.
