What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grief Resource Specialist position at NAMI Maine?
The Grief Resource Specialist will oversee support for NAMI Maine Suicide Prevention efforts to address organizational, community, and individual needs after a suicide or traumatic loss. This role functions as the first point of connection in a network of community grief resources. Efforts will include assessing needs after a traumatic loss or event to link affected individuals to appropriate contacts and resources, including immediate support, helpful materials, educational sessions, and referrals for care.
This position will also work closely with the Suicide Prevention team and other NAMI Maine teams to deliver mental health, suicide prevention, and suicide postvention training to community organizations and schools.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Act as a resource for grief support and response after suicide or other traumatic loss.
- Receive, assess, and facilitate requests for support after a suicide or traumatic loss, working with the Director of Suicide Prevention.
- Collaborate with the Director to conduct outreach and promote available NAMI Maine grief support services to expand the program's reach.
- Collaborate with the Director to research and adapt models of suicide grief support to Maine.
- Manage and update all loss-related resources and maintain a library of loss-related materials for sharing with those in need, and develop loss-related resources and materials based on identified gaps to serve community needs.
- Deliver education and technical support to schools and organizations after a loss.
- Deliver basic suicide prevention and mental health education to schools and community organizations.
- Maintain and update program-related resource lists of providers and programs, and relevant participant and volunteer databases.
- Facilitate the Suicide Grief Resource peer group and education sessions.
- Coordinate all aspects of grief skill development training to increase Maine clinicians’ capacity to provide grief support.
- Learn and utilize all state and agency-mandated data reporting and tracking.
- Utilize various online platforms required for completing tasks, including Apricot, Survey Monkey, Squarespace, Microsoft Office Suite, and other platforms used by the agency.
- Complete all required training by the funding source and NAMI Maine.
- Seek out and utilize supervision and support to complete tasks outlined within the role.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Suicide Prevention.
Qualifications:
- Minimum BA degree of 3 years in a relevant field. (Master’s degree preferred)
- Significant attention to detail and ability to multitask.
- Experience personally or professionally with suicide or traumatic loss and associated grief.
- Previous experience in community/school engagement is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in the coordination of group learning and processing.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to navigate difficult or emotionally charged discussions with empathy and understanding while adhering to appropriate role boundaries.
- Demonstrated passion and commitment to processing suicide or traumatic loss.
- Effective communication through multiple online and social media tools.
- Current motor vehicle license, insurance, and reliable transportation for statewide travel.
- Must successfully pass criminal and DHHS background checks.

This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
