Job Description

The Mechanic Helper is responsible for maintaining and repairing vehicles & equipment by assisting mechanics in performing routine vehicle and equipment maintenance.

 

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside mechanic with inspecting and making repairs on all aspects of automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with general and major work on vehicles, light and heavy trucks, graders, and other automotive diesel and mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and related parts.
  • Tune motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Assist with repairing and overhauling brakes, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; repair and install hydraulic controls.
  • Perform different phases of tire work and minor body repairs.
  • Prepares shop work orders on equipment repair, and orders parts as need to maintain stock.
  • Makes service call as needed.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Perform other incidental tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent or ten (10) years directly related experience will be considered.
  • Diesel Technology degree preferred.
  • Previous Mechanic experience repairing and troubleshooting various trucks and construction related equipment.
  • Drivers License and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions; work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places and outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, bend over, or crawl and talk or hear.  Steel toed boots required on the job.

 

Travel may require an employee or contractor to pass a TSA security checkpoint. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

Reasoning Ability

 

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
