Summary
The Director of Total Rewards is responsible for the strategic leadership, design, implementation, and administration of enterprise-wide compensation, benefits, retirement, and recognition programs. This role ensures that NANA North’s total rewards framework aligns with its business objectives, workforce needs, and shareholder employment advancement initiatives. The incumbent will play a critical role in enhancing NANA’s employee value proposition (EVP) and ensuring competitiveness in attracting, retaining, and engaging talent while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements. This position requires extensive experience working with Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) and a strong understanding of shareholder hire preference policies and culturally relevant workforce strategies.
This position is an onsite position in Anchorage, Alaska. We are not offering a fully remote work option at this time.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Total Rewards Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and execute a comprehensive Total Rewards strategy aligned with NANA North’s mission, values, and workforce priorities.
- Lead the design, governance, and administration of compensation, benefits, and recognition programs across all NANA North companies.
- Ensure total rewards programs align with shareholder employment advancement initiatives and are culturally relevant to ANC workforces.
- Stay ahead of market trends, regulatory changes, and best practices to enhance NANA’s Total Rewards offerings.
Compensation & Incentives
- Oversee the design and administration of employee base pay and short-term incentives programs.
- Conduct market analysis, salary benchmarking, and pay equity reviews to ensure competitive positioning.
- Partner with Finance and HR leadership to ensure compensation structures align with business performance and shareholder value.
- Manage the job evaluation process and salary structure design across multiple business lines.
Benefits & Wellness Programs
- Lead the design, negotiation, and administration of benefits plans (healthcare, retirement, wellness, leave policies, etc.), ensuring cost-effectiveness and competitiveness.
- Ensure regulatory compliance with ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, DOL, IRS, and other applicable laws and regulations.
- Oversee retirement and pension plans and collaborate with investment and fiduciary committees on plan management.
- Drive employee well-being initiatives that promote physical, mental, and financial wellness.
Recognition & Engagement
- Develop and enhance employee recognition programs that reinforce performance, retention, and company values.
- Improve total rewards communication to increase employee awareness, understanding, and engagement.
- Lead initiatives that support diverse workforce needs, including shareholders and rural employees.
Compliance, Governance, & Risk Management
- Ensure all benefits and compensation programs comply with NANA policies, legal, and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with Legal, Finance, and HR teams to mitigate risks associated with benefits, compensation, and retirement plans.
- Oversee vendor relationships and contract negotiations for benefits, retirement, and compensation programs.
Executive Leadership & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on total rewards strategies, workforce trends, and shareholder employment needs.
- Partners with HR Business Partners, Finance, and Legal teams to align total rewards with broader workforce strategies.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the Benefits/Total Rewards team, fostering a culture of innovation, effective use of technology, excellence, and continuous improvement.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, finance, or related field.
- 10 years of progressive leadership experience in total rewards, compensation, benefits, or related HR functions, with the last 5 years in a director role or higher.
- Must have experience working with Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) and understanding of shareholder employment policies.
- Strong expertise in compensation design, benefits administration, and incentive plan management.
- Proven ability to develop enterprise-wide strategies in a multi-business environment.
- Knowledge of executive compensation, market benchmarking, and pay equity best practices.
- Expertise in labor laws, ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, and retirement plan regulations.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to influence senior leadership.
- A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NANA’s vehicle insurance policy
