Job Title: Elementary School Nurse Location: Nantucket Intermediate School (Grades 35) Work Year: School year (10 months)Position Summary: The Elementary School Nurse at Nantucket Intermediate School (NIS) promotes the health and well-being of students in grades 35 by providing direct nursing care, implementing health plans, supporting wellness education, and collaborating with school staff, families, and community health providers. The school nurse serves as a key member of the student support team and contributes to creating a safe, healthy, and inclusive school environment.
This role includes supporting students and staff in specialized sub-separate classrooms with complex medical and developmental needs.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provide skilled nursing care, including first aid, medication administration, and management of chronic and acute health conditions.Maintain and update individual health records for all students in compliance with state and federal regulations.Conduct health screenings (vision, hearing, postural, etc.) and follow up with families as needed.Monitor immunization compliance and communicate with families regarding requirements.Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and emergency action plans (EAPs) for students with specific health needs.Collaborate with school staff to support students physical, mental, and emotional well-being.Work closely with specialized sub-separate classroom staff to ensure coordinated care and support for students with intensive medical or developmental needs.Serve as a health consultant for staff on matters related to student health and school safety.Respond to medical emergencies and participate in school crisis response planning.Promote health and wellness through classroom presentations and school-wide initiatives.Communicate effectively with families and community health providers to coordinate care.Support student attendance by identifying and addressing health-related barriers to learning.Maintain a clean, safe, and confidential health office environment.Document nursing activities in accordance with district and state guidelines.Participate in professional development to remain current in school nursing practices and public health issues.Qualifications: Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in Massachusetts (BSN required).Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) School Nurse License or eligibility.Current CPR and First Aid certification (AED certification preferred).Experience working with children in a school or pediatric setting is preferred.Experience or comfort in supporting students with complex needs in specialized classroom settings.Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.Commitment to supporting the health, safety, and success of all students.
