AmeriCorps EXL Tutor

AmeriCorps EXL is an exciting opportunity to be part of an ambitious team working towards closing the achievement gap and removing barriers to learning for youth. Students are at the heart of our work. We are seeking proactive, adaptable, enthusiastic, and dedicated AmeriCorps EXL Tutors to support the academic and social skills development of high-need students in local area schools of Santa Rosa, California. We partner with schools to identify students who would benefit from a positive, adult role model that can give targeted academic support in literacy and / or mathematics, as well as mentor students to be their most resilient selves. EXL Tutors also play a key role in leading Active Recess activities with students.

Program Overview

The goal of the AmeriCorps EXL program is to improve the academic performance and success of students, who are not performing at grade level, by providing comprehensive support. The EXL program applies a layered approach implemented by the AmeriCorps Tutors for K – 8 students. Students in need of additional support will be assessed and assigned targeted tutoring services in literacy and / or math.  All students at the school site benefit from the support of organized, collaborative games and conflict resolution during recess / break and lunch.

Requirements

Essential AmeriCorps EXL Tutor Duties

Active Recess :

  • Active Recess : Structured and organized activities facilitated by adults in order to include students in games / sports while building conflict resolution skills
  • EXL members will plan and facilitate Active Recess activities and games during the core day and after school recess / breaks and lunch times, focusing on supporting positive student behaviors
  • Members are assigned a daily game that they facilitate and engage with students.

Academic Tutoring :

  • Tutors will work with students who are academically below grade level in literacy and / or math skills.
  • Tutoring : Lead daily 30-minute academic tutoring sessions with students 1-to-1, in pairs, or in small groups.
  • Students will work with the Tutor for half of the school year.
  • Tutors will facilitate lessons. These lesson plans are created by the member and / or provided by the teacher or curriculum.
  • Tutors will support approximately 20 students throughout the course of the school year.
  • Expanded Learning Support :

  • Expanded Learning programs support selected students beyond the classroom, often outside the normal school day hours. Expanded Learning programs are often referred to as After School programs.
  • Support the after school program daily via the homework help hour.
  • Members will engage with groups of students to lead physical, SEL (social emotional learning), and enrichment activities.
  • Members will facilitate the student summer program alongside the EXL After School program.
  • Member Development :

  • Participate in training and professional development to improve quality services for youth
  • Participate in National Service events to support the local community
  • Cesar Chavez Day of Service
  • Volunteer Recruitment :

  • Members will work with their school site team to recruit both one-time (e.g., presenters) and ongoing volunteers during the school year.
  • Service Commitment

  • Full-time, 6 - month  commitment serving a minimum of 900 hours - will include some weekends and evenings
  • Hours are Monday – Friday from 8 : 00 – 6 : 00PM , typically at least 45 hours per week (varies slightly by  school site)
  • Service hours are expected to occur in-person at school sites,  and EXL members are required to live within a reasonable commute distance from their school site.
  • Qualifications and Characteristics :

  • Must be at least 18 years of age (17 with parental approval)
  • Clear criminal background check (DOJ and FBI; National Sex Offender Public Database)
  • Submit current, clear TB (tuberculosis) test
  • Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by start date
  • Must either be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States  (INS Form I-551).  Due to federal grant restrictions, we currently cannot accept DACA recipients.
  • Must not have served more than 3 terms of service previously with AmeriCorps State and National programs

SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) Mentoring : Mentoring : Conduct 60 minutes of SEL Mentoring each week with students 1-to-1 or in small groups up to 3 Students will work with the Mentor for the duration of the school year. Mentors will facilitate lessons. These lesson plans are created by the members and / or provided by the teacher or curriculum. Mentors will support approximately up to 20 students throughout the course of the school year. Expanded Learning Support : Expanded Learning programs support selected students beyond the classroom, often outside the normal school day hours. Expanded Learning programs are often referred to as After School programs. Support the after school program daily via the homework help hour. EXL Members will engage with groups of students to lead physical, SEL (social-emotional learning), and enrichment activities. EXL Members will help facilitate the student summer program.
