The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, invites applications for a newly created research position in the Small Bodies Group. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in remote sensing, specifically in the remote sensing of planetary objects and rings using ultraviolet spectrometry. The candidate will be expected to participate in scientific activities on NASA’s Europa Clipper mission and maintain a close relationship with the PI of the Europa Ultraviolet Spectrograph based at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. The candidate will also be expected to participate in the development and capture of future NASA mission and instrument opportunities.
Applicants should have a strong record in mission operations and UV spectrometry and mission formulation and development. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop an independently funded research program and regularly publish peer-reviewed research papers. The candidate will help to manage JPL’s portfolio of externally funded research. Opportunities exist for participation in ongoing and future space missions.

Responsibilities:
- Work with UV technology developers at JPL to develop and deploy UV instrumentation.
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and give talks at national and international conferences.
- Support the Europa Clipper project by serving as the Investigation Scientist for the Europa UV Spectrograph.
- Support operations of Europa Clipper, including planning for pointing operations.
- Serves as a scientific point of contact for the capture of Uranus Orbiter and Probe, with UV instrumentation for moons characterization and rings science, as well as other ocean worlds missions such as the Enceladus OrbiLander, and associated New Frontiers concepts.
- PhD in planetary science or a related field with 2 years of related experience.
- Peer-reviewed publications in high-impact planetary science journals.
- Demonstrated experience working with large engineering and science teams.
- Demonstrated professional experience with developing and winning NASA research proposals.
- Scientific mission experience related to UV remote sensing.
- Strong standing and presence in NASA’s Planetary Science community.
- Wide-ranging experience and advanced knowledge with spacecraft mission
- science development and operations.
- Wide-ranging experience and advanced knowledge with UV flight instrument, through the entire scientific lifecycle of the mission, including formulation, development, operations, analysis, and interpretation.
- Familiarity with the Europa Clipper project and mission architecture.
