This position may be filled as either a Code Enforcement Officer I or II with the salary depending on qualifications.
An employee in this class inspects construction work in progress to enforce State codes for building construction including the four trade areas of building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes. Work involves performing skilled inspections to determine the quality of workmanship, materials, and safety precautions; requires exercising judgment in interpreting state codes. Technical judgment is required to interpret provisions of the codes as applied to practical construction projects and circumstances. Inspections may require physical effort and are performed under hazards present in dealing with construction work in progress. The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and extreme hot and cold temperatures. Work is also subject to noise and dusts and may be required to function in close and narrow areas while construction is in progress. Tact, courtesy, and firmness must be exercised in dealing with contractors and the general public. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Planning and Inspections and is evaluated through conferences, review of reports and records, and contractor and citizen reactions.
- Inspects building construction for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes, manufactured homes code.
- Reviews site plans, blue prints, and specifications for code compliance and receives applications for permits.
- Advises contractors, homeowners in interpreting and applying code regulations.
- Notifies responsible parties of defects and re-inspects to determine if corrective actions have been taken; issues stop orders if necessary.
- Maintains records of inspections and prepares necessary reports.
- Communicates with citizens concerning code requirements.
- Reviews and studies building code regulations to stay informed of changes and completes all necessary classes to maintain required certifications.
- Enforces minimum housing code and performs damage assessments after emergencies resulting in property damage.

Recommends judicial actions and may be required to testify in court against violators of the State building code. - Performs related duties as required.

Candidates who possess the Class I qualifications are eligible for a starting annual salary of $58,751. Class I qualifications require four Level I Standard Inspector Certificates issued in the areas of Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical.
Candidates who do not yet possess the Class I qualifications, but who are able to obtain them within the first three years of employment, are eligible for a starting annual salary of $47,001.
Candidates who possess the Class II qualifications may be eligible for a higher starting annual salary depending on experience. Class II qualifications require four Level I Standard Inspector Certificates issued in the areas of Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical plus a total of five additional Level II or Level III Standard Inspector Certificates issued across the same four areas.
