POSITION TITLE

Regional Public Safety Dispatcher

POSITION SUMMARY

The Regional Public Safety Dispatcher serves as the vital link between the public and emergency responders. At Nashoba Valley Regional Dispatch District the Regional Public

Safety Dispatchers are responsible for receiving emergency and non-emergency calls for service over the telephone and by other means, employing appropriate call screening protocols, entering data into a computer(s) as it is being received and dispatching the appropriate public safety resources for multiple Central MA communities.

The Regional Public Safety Dispatcher is responsible for interaction with the general public, other public safety dispatch agencies, and field personnel in law enforcement, fire and EMS.

This position requires appropriate professional response to requests for services from the public as well as field personnel from the member municipalities and their service partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include coordinating the operations and activities in the Regional

Emergency Communications Center. Monitor and operate radio, computer, telephone, and other specialized equipment in support of public safety communications and dispatch functions. Perform other dispatch, signal monitoring, and communications support duties as assigned.

  • Receiving Emergency and Routine Telephone Calls and Obtaining Information Using

Structured Protocols and Dispatching Public Safety Personnel and Resources

  • Understanding Member Police and Fire Field Operations and Procedures
  • Processing Alarms from Police, Fire and Central Station Signaling Equipment
  • Providing Information to Responders, the Public and Other Agencies
  • Providing Emergency Medical Dispatch Services and Instructions
  • Servicing Field Unit Requests for Service
  • Reporting and Recordkeeping
  • Troubleshooting 911 and Other Signaling Equipment as needed
  • Operating General Facility Devices and Equipment
  • Taking Reports Over the Phone
  • Completing Required Continuing Education Training

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED. Valid MA driver’s license. Preference is given to those with current Massachusetts NG 911 certification and public safety work experience.
  • Successful passage of screening process to include typing (min 25 WPM), general skills test, and a thorough background and criminal history review.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse population.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand, write, read, and speak English clearly.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Capacity to work effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Ability to operate office equipment including copiers, fax and scanners; and to familiarize him/herself with Manuals and District Policies and Procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask during periods of high stress and high work volume.
  • Ability to process large amounts of data quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player and to provide the utmost level of customer service to the general public and field responders.
  • Ability to work any and all shifts, and to work nights, weekends, overtime, holidays on a rotating schedule.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Busy office work environment characterized by multiple phone lines and radios, teletype and box alarms, employee interaction, open space and fluorescent lighting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. Tasks may involve extended periods of time (up to 16 hours) at a computer or workstation. Essential functions require vision and hearing acuity.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT & COMPENSATION

  • Full-time hourly, non-exempt, benefitted, union position.
  • Hourly Rate: $30.27 to $35.80 Shift Differential, Overtime, Holiday Pay and Other

Annual Stipends.

  • PTO includes Sick, Vacation and Personal Days.

Job Type: Full-time
