DESCRIPTION
The Head Girls’ Basketball Coach oversees all aspects of the girls’ basketball programs on campus, including the high school girls’ basketball team and developmental programs for younger student-athletes. This individual will lead the high school girls’ team, organize skills camps, represent the girls’ basketball program with interested prospective families, and build strong relationships with local travel programs to enhance the school's athletic presence. The coach will lead with a Christian mindset and perspective, fostering Christian leadership principles within the program.
This position falls under the Upper School Athletics Program and reports directly to the Athletic Director but receives additional directional insight from the Head of Upper School.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Coaching & Program Oversight -
- Serve as the Head Coach for the high school girls’ basketball team, supervising players during practice, games, travel, and other team functions.
- Responsible for all matters related to the basketball program including, but not limited to, player personnel, off-season conditioning, scheduling, fundraising (as applicable), care & maintenance of equipment and uniforms.
- Directly responsible for developing, evaluating, and producing a depth chart, directing the team during competition, conducting team meetings, and establishing consistent communication with the families of the basketball program.
- Oversee and support all basketball programs on campus, including 7th & 8th grade and 5th & 6th grade teams.
- Exhibit enthusiasm and sincere interest in coaching and working with student-athletes while focusing on character development.
- Implement a player development system that prepares athletes for competition at the high school level and beyond.
- Ensure proper coaching standards and philosophies are applied across all levels of the basketball program.
- Use sound, proven coaching methods and display knowledge and innovation as basketball evolves.
- Communicate with individual players and the team about goals, performance, and progress.
- Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establish and oversee penalties for breach of these standards by individual athletes.
- Ensure that the safety and welfare of the student-athletes are a top priority in the basketball program during practice and game situations.
- Supervise practice area and locker room when student-athletes are present to ensure safe and proper conditions.
- Communicate and work with athletic trainers and parents involving student-athletes injuries.
- Engage in professional development activities to improve coaching skills, strategies, and techniques.
- Support and facilitate the appropriate use of all assistant coaches in the program and support head coaches in younger programs.
Program Promotion & Recruiting -
- Organize and offer periodic basketball skills camps for athletes of various age groups to enhance skill development and engagement.
- Support travel tournaments and other in-season tournaments hosted on campus.
- Welcome prospective students to campus as the girls’ basketball program representative to assist in recruiting basketball student-athletes who align with the school’s mission and athletic program goals.
- Assist in recruiting knowledgeable, principled coaching staff who will set the right example for the players on and off the court.
- Establish support and notoriety for the NCS girls’ basketball program and actively build relationships within the basketball community, clubs, and leagues.
- Work with other NCS coaches to facilitate and encourage multi-sport student-athletes.
- Present a professional image and provide a positive role model regarding personal habits, language, and conduct.
- Work to promote current student-athletes to collegiate athletic opportunities actively.
Administrative & Operational Duties -
- Oversee the scheduling, equipment, inventory of uniforms, supplies, and overall operation of the girls’ basketball program.
- Attend TSSAA rules interpretation and all-conference meetings (when applicable).
- Submit weekly Eagles Student-Athlete of the Week nominees.
- Communicate with assistant coaches concerning their roles, duties, and expectations.
- Maintain and update accurate team and individual statistics, records, and season results.
- Develop and oversee the tryout/evaluation process for the high school and middle school programs.
- Foster a culture of academic success, leadership, and character development within the basketball program that aligns with the school’s Christian philosophy.
- Coordinate with strength and conditioning staff to implement training programs that support athlete performance and injury prevention.
- Maintain an accurate roster and support the athletic department and counseling team regarding the academic and athletic eligibility of student-athletes.
- Prepare and adhere to the approved budget.
- Follow proper budget and purchase order procedures.
- Publicize team and individual accomplishments to the school’s Communications Department.
- Work closely with the athletic department to schedule games and practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level, preferably at a private school.
- Bachelor’s Degree (Required)
- Teaching Certificate (Preferred)
- Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Familiarity with TSSAA high school basketball rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
- Trained in First Aid with a valid CPR Certification (Preferred)
- Participated in basketball at the high school, collegiate, or professional level(s) (Preferred)
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Capable of communicating effectively with the media, school administration, and the greater NCS community.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and supervisory skills.
- Proactive and able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong work ethic and moral compass.
