Position Title: School & Family Program Educator (Full-time)
Location: Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn Harbor, NY
The Education Department at the Nassau County Museum of Art (NCMA) is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of the arts through a dynamic schedule of exhibitions and educational experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. Our programs for students, families, and adults are designed to provide visitors with opportunities to engage with, discuss, and create visual art through guided tours, lectures, and hands-on workshops.
NCMA is seeking a dynamic, creative, and organized individual to lead interactive gallery tours for school groups and facilitate hands-on workshops for families. This role includes developing and running the Summer Art Lab Program (4 weeks) and playing a key part in building relationships with constituents, growing community partnerships, and expanding access to the museum’s offerings, ensuring inclusivity and broadening participation in our programs.
This individual will report directly to the Director of Education. This is a full-time position. Please review the “Basic Details” section for specific hours and dates.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the education team to design gallery and studio experiences for students and families using the museum’s diverse resources, including exhibitions, works in the sculpture park, formal gardens, and the varied ecosystems found on the museum grounds.
- Lead interactive gallery tours for students (K-12), both in the museum galleries and on surrounding outdoor grounds.
- Plan and facilitate weekend art-making workshops for families with children ages 5 to 12 and their adult companions.
- Lead art-making activities during school breaks.
- Work closely with all museum departments to ensure a cohesive experience for visitors.
- Contribute to the development of professional development programs for museum educators and teaching artists.
- Stay informed on current research in museum education to inform your work.
- Generate educational materials, such as Family Guides, Educator Guides, and Gallery Guides.
Curriculum Development and Teaching:
- Develop and facilitate family-oriented art-making and exhibition-based programs, including large family weekend events.
- Lead inquiry-based gallery discussions and activities using Visual Thinking Strategies for visiting school groups (K-12).
- Manage all parent and family communications.
- Assist in creating and leading exhibition-based professional development programs for K-12 teachers.
- Co-write and design gallery guides for current exhibitions.
Technology and Virtual Programming (training available):
- Film and edit videos related to museum exhibitions.
- Prepare content for website and social media outreach.
Qualifications:
- A BS, MFA, or MA in museum education, art education, art history, or a related field, with 2 years of teaching experience, particularly with families and children, including early childhood and elementary education.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both writing and speaking.
- A passion for classic and contemporary art, with hands-on teaching experience in art-making workshops.
- Knowledge of child development and familiarity with state learning standards.
- Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite
Additional Skills (Preferred):
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and a strong desire to grow as an educator.
- Formal teaching experience with Pre-K to 12th-grade students, art materials, and hands-on activities.
- Knowledge of WordPress and Canva.
- Multilingual abilities are a plus.
- A background in Art Therapy is a plus.
Application Process:
Qualified candidates will be asked to lead a short, sample tour of their choice in the museum's galleries to demonstrate presentation skills, pedagogy, and group management techniques.
Basic Details:
- Salary: 40k per annum, with medical insurance benefits
- Status: Full-time position (35 hours per week)
- Schedule: Tuesdays to Saturdays (Month of July: Monday-Friday), 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (flexible start and end times)
- Start Date: Some training sessions in June and early July, potentially starting in mid-July.
