Position Summary
As a Medical Assistant, provides direct and indirect patient care in the medical office setting demonstrating clinical education and competence in direct patient care as per scope of practice. Meets the communication needs of the patient family, departmental staff and medical staff for the clinic; Prepares and compiles records for the Office as directed; Initiates directions from physician and nursing staff; Participates in performance improvement activities; Maintains regulatory agency requirements, clinic policies and procedures and standards.
Primary Responsibilities

1. Inquiries regarding health hazards on patients over 11 years of age and records at every visit;
2. Asks LMP and OB history if appropriate and records in chart.
3. Ascertains that exam rooms are cleaned and scales balanced
4. Checks treatment rooms for necessary supplies and replenishes daily.
5. Completes appropriate forms for patient (and gives out appropriate literature). All forms should be stamped with clinic and doctor's stamp prior to exam.
6. Takes blood pressure on all patients 3 years of age and older every 6 months and at every checkup, evaluation, sport, pre-op physicals, and med checks.
7. Prepares patients, physically and psychologically for treatment and diagnostic tests or studies done in office or elsewhere:
a. Takes care of some referrals to other doctors or for durable medical equipment.
b. Makes hospital admission arrangements and escorts patient if necessary.
c. Gives patient instructions regarding medications or supplies.
8. In assisting MD with patients, undresses and properly drapes patients for exam.
9. Takes appropriate action in emergency situations.
10. Performs vision and audio exams.
11. Checks patient bathrooms periodically, making sure they are clean and tissue and soap is provided.
12. Checks kitchen at end of day making sure coffeepot has been turned off and cleaned.
13. Wipes down exam table, writing desk and infant scale daily with germicide.
14. Puts away supplies that have come in and notes anything that must be ordered.
15. Returns calls to patients needing advice and/or information
16. Completes lab requisitions making sure specimen is labeled and submitted to the appropriate lab. Records when results are received and requesting those needed.
17. Prints Links immunization records, "Return to School/Work Notes", and completes record releases.
18. Maintains freezer/refrigerator temperature logs. Documents any correctional action taken. Locks freezer/refrigerator at the end of the day.
19. Adheres to OSHA guidelines and is familiar with SDS.
20. Adheres to clinic HIPAA policy.
21. Follows guidelines when giving out prescriptions/forms/immunization records to parents/patients. Obtains signatures.
22. Maintains a violence free work place.
23. Retrieves and records patient activity for each client visit to prepare for proper billing information.
24. Obtain client payments, verify patient eligibility and record all pertinent insurance information.
25. Cordially greet and receive clients, ascertain their needs and appropriately direct visitors and callers.
26. Perform a variety of receptionist duties to include clerical and electronic filing to help maintain efficient operations.
27. Provide appropriate answers of numerous phone calls, or direct the caller the proper place.
28. Attends staff meetings and in-services; Participates in emergency and disaster situations; participates in performance improvement as assigned; performs miscellaneous duties as deemed appropriate and when assigned by supervisor.
29. Schedules and confirms appointments, verifies insurance, collects payments.
30. Scan all mail, patient registration, etc. into EMR on a daily basis.
31. Retrieves mail daily from NRMC.
32. Transports labs.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Current BCLS certification or must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
3. Regulatory requirement for the medical assistant: successful completion of a course of learning for the medical assistant.
4. Current M/A Certificate.
5. Annual OSHA/HIPPA Training.
Preferred Education and Experience
1. Basic computer knowledge.
2. Knowledge of medical terminology.
3. Knowledge of obtaining vital signs, collection of specimens.
4. Knowledge of other assigned duties related to safe quality patient care within scope of practice.
5. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
6. Additional languages preferred.
