Summary

This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. As a Supervisory Archivist Deputy Director of Archival Operations, you will be responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and controlling the archival functions of the employees assigned to the incumbent. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring participation of the staff in all phases of the lifecycle of records in the purview of the unit.

Duties

As a Supervisory Archivist, you will :

  • Carry out leadership responsibilities and complex professional assignments involving delivery of archival and advisory services to federal agencies, NARA units and offices, and a wide spectrum of customers and researchers.
  • Implement actions to accession records into unit holdings, according to records schedules, NARA policies, and federal law.
  • Supervise activities that establish and maintain physical and intellectual control over accessioned records.
  • Assist with Special Access and FOIA processing within the unit as appropriate.
  • Provide supervision to subordinate staff in order to accomplish the work of the unit.
  • Work directly with the field support officer, administrative officer, FOSA, FRC supervisor, and building manager (depending on site), to address resource and facility support needs, meet facility requirements, provide information technology, and carry out purchasing and personnel actions.
  • Handle complex archival and administrative problems and specified tasks associated with the full spectrum of archival science and duties, and program and human capital administration.

    Conditions of Employment

    The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • A one year supervisory or managerial probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.

  • Qualifications

    You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

    Specialized Experience for the GS-13 : You must have one year of experience at the GS-12 level, or equivalent in other public or private sector, that is directly related to the position as listed above and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as :

  • Supervising or leading a team or project performing one or more archival functions; AND
  • Utilizing archival principles relating to holding security, reference, processing, reformatting and accessioning concepts or laws, to provide advice and guidance to management relative to incorporating program strategies and goals into operational processes and work plans; AND
  • Proposing and implementing solutions / strategies for program improvement to assure the continuing effectiveness of activities in support of the agency's mission.
  • In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement , if applicable : For the GS-13, you must have been at the GS-12level for 52 weeks.

    Education

    Education Requirements : The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    Individual Occupational Requirement

    Basic requirements for all grades :

    A. Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and / or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following : archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

    B. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
