Job Description

PublicSource is looking for a creative and strategic audience growth & engagement producer to help expand our reach and deepen our connection with communities across the Pittsburgh region.

We’re a nonprofit newsroom committed to delivering impactful local journalism that informs and inspires our neighbors. In this role, you’ll bring our stories to life across social platforms, newsletters and emerging digital spaces — meeting people where they are with engaging, informative content.

You have a keen eye for social trends and community conversations, which can help shape our newsroom’s approach to coverage. You know how to craft compelling social content, produce newsletters that people want to open, and write headlines that drive both engagement and SEO impact. From Instagram carousels to TikTok videos to LinkedIn posts, you know how to adapt content to fit different audiences and platforms.

This is a strategic role where analytics and intuition go hand in hand — you’ll track performance, experiment with new formats and refine our approach to keep growing and engaging our audience. Above all, you’ll be a champion for PublicSource’s journalism, ensuring that more people see, share and connect with our work.

You’ll collaborate closely with our Creative Director, who leads our visuals and audience team, and be part of a newsroom that values facts, transparency and diverse voices.

Responsibilities

  • Share and showcase our journalism across major social platforms including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and X/Twitter through strategic distribution and experimentation.
  • Consult the publication schedule regularly with an eye toward enterprising approaches to the promotion of coming stories.
  • Create timely, accurate and engaging social media content, including compelling copy and visuals optimized for each platform.
  • Newsletter production/features: drafting 3-4 newsletters a week, collaborating with others on brainstorming and executing newsletter list growth strategies (e.g. website call-to-action management.)
  • SEO: Checking stories for SEO considerations; helping to grow our newsroom’s understanding of SEO concepts in general.
  • Track and analyze performance metrics to refine our content strategy and achieve growth targets.
  • Social listening for potential story ideas to feed to reporters/editors as well as monitoring/responding to comments and questions.
  • Foster community engagement by initiating relevant discussions and calls for participation and when relevant, develop and write original stories based on audience insights, social trends and engagement data.
  • Guide and educate the newsroom on social media best practices and engagement strategies.
  • Plan and execute promotional campaigns for newsletters, events and membership initiatives.
  • Stay atop different platforms’ trends and research new ways to attract or engage readers.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development and all-team initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse collaborators. Most, if not all of these duties, are in collaboration with others on the team. The audience growth & engagement producer will report to the creative director and have weekly meetings to set an agenda. Close collaboration with the leadership team and newsroom colleagues will be expected as well.

Job Requirements

Requirements

  • Understanding of journalism/news judgment either via study or practice of it and/or consumption of news and social media produced on behalf of a news brand.
  • Confidence writing social media content and willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of or interest in SEO best practices.
  • Experience or interest in audience engagement analytics and social media KPIs.
  • Experience or interest in creating assets for social media platforms in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or another related design tool.
  • Experience using Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Wordpress, Parse.ly is a plus.
  • Curious about and aware of audience trends in the digital media space.
  • A detail-oriented multitasker who is communicative, collaborative and diplomatic.

PublicSource is seeking candidates with two to three years of related experience, preferably in a newsroom, but we’re open to applications from people interested in getting into journalism. Entry-level candidates will be considered.

Finalists for the position will be asked to craft a promotion plan and draft social media posts and will be paid for the time spent on the task.

The salary range for this position is $50,000-$55,000, commensurate with experience and skills.

PublicSource has an office in Pittsburgh and operates in a hybrid work environment.
