Position Summary:
The Greenwich Audubon Center opened in 1943 as the National Audubon Society’s first environmental education center in the United States. The 285-acre sanctuary has approximately seven miles of trails that lead to a hardwood forest, old fields, a lake, streams and vernal ponds.
The Greenwich Audubon Center provides the opportunity to work in a day camp setting with children ages 5 to 10. Camp runs for seven weeks and campers spend time exploring the Center’s meadows, ponds, and forests. Camp counselors will work with the Camp Director and Audubon Education Specialists to develop lesson plans. You will conduct daily hikes and other activities with a group of up to 14 children, while maintaining a safe, fun, and educational environment.
This position begins on June 30, 2025, and includes a week of staff training from June 30 to July 3. Summer Nature Day Camp begins on July 7 and ends on August 22. The daily work hours are 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Each Tuesday all staff will be required to attend a staff meeting from 3:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m. (day subject to change).
Compensation:
$16.50 - $18.00 / hour
Additional Job Description
Essential Functions:
Partner/Collaborate/Assist with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.
Planning and executing each weeklong camp/program session for their small group of children, including teaching discovery hikes, pond explorations, live animal programs, nature crafts, and games, setting up and cleaning up each day’s activities.
Attend a week long training. Create, prepare, and deliver 7 weeks of nature, science, and conservation-based curriculum for assigned age groups centered on weekly themes.
Create a meaningful experience for summer program participants while teaching an appreciation and respect for the natural environment.
Counselors must keep good communication with the Educator to report bathroom usage (for cleaning purposes,) possible sick campers, as well as other camp communication as required.
Deep cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, materials, tables, chairs, and other items used during the day will be expected at the end of each camp day or as needed.
Perform all other duties deemed necessary by the Camp Director to further the mission of GAC and Audubon.
Educators will help with other aspects of a nature center, such as contacting camp parents by phone or email, photocopying, or more.
Commitment to staff all camp sessions is required.
Qualifications and Experience:
Commitment to Audubon’s organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation.
Completion of at least two years of college coursework in environmental or life sciences or a background in natural history is preferred.
Some teaching experience and/or curriculum development is necessary, and environmental education experience is preferred.
Seasonal Educators must be confident in leading a group and initiating activities, working independently, and aware of GAC safety procedures and the ability to enforce those safety precautions.
Candidates should possess a strong work ethic, self-motivation, ongoing enthusiasm, commitment, flexibility, a desire to learn, and the ability to work well with others and with children.
Counselors must show respect for others, nature, and the outdoors, be enthusiastic about working, even in unfavorable weather conditions, pleasant, reliable, and able to carry out simple assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
CPR/First Aid Certification a plus.
