Position Summary
Audubon Washington (AWA) seeks an experienced conservation practitioner to recover at-risk coastal bird populations and bolster habitat and community resilience to climate change in the context of Audubon’s hemispheric ambitions for bird conservation. Reporting to the Director of Bird Conservation, the Program Manager, Coasts will engage partners, interest holders, and communities in science, policy, and outreach actions that result in the protection, enhancement, and restoration of coastal habitats for priority birds today and in the future. To achieve results at scale, the Program Manager will work in partnership with Audubon staff and partners across the pacific flyway. The Program Manager will coordinate with state and national policy staff, state and initiative leaders, and Audubon chapters and members to ensure the success of conservation initiatives that are critical to ensuring resilience and recovery in Washington and across the flyway.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about bird conservation, experienced working in partnership with individuals and organizations that bring different ways of knowing, stewarding, and engaging with nature, and will have demonstrated expertise in developing and executing collaborative conservation strategies.
This is a hybrid position. The employee is expected to work out of the Washington state office regularly once per week and multiple days a week as job demands.

- $56,000 - $64,000 / year = National
- $65,000 - $72,000 / year = Greater Seattle
- $72,000 - $82,000 / year = Seattle, WA
Essential Functions
- Working closely with the Director of Bird Conservation and in collaboration with colleagues across the Americas including through joint planning and execution of shared priorities, develop a coastal conservation strategy that builds upon Audubon’s Puget Sound and pacific flyway conservation portfolio to date.
- Collaborate with the Director of Conservation and other AWA staff to implement Audubon’s coastal conservation strategy in Washington, collaborating with partners and chapters to achieve multi-benefit outcomes at priority places.
- Develop and maintain relationships with Audubon chapters and partners, including but not limited to federal and state agencies, Tribal nations, and NGOs.
- Serve as spokesperson for Audubon Washington in regional science, conservation, and policy forums and provide workshops, lectures, or training for conservation practitioners.
- In partnership with Audubon Washington conservation and policy staff, identify and support implementing key policy strategies to support science and monitoring, reduce threats to declining bird species, stabilize target populations, and increase available habitat.
- Coordinate with state and national policy staff, as well as Audubon chapters and members, to ensure the success of state and federal policy initiatives critical to ensuring coastal and marine health in coastal Washington and beyond.
- Pursue opportunities to raise the profile of the Audubon Coasts program and disseminate information about coastal and marine birds to a broad audience through printed, spoken, and electronic media.
- Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts. Collaborate with fundraising staff and program leadership to identify and secure private and public funding in support of this work. This will include writing public and private grants, participating in donor events, and providing content for inclusion in fundraising and reporting materials.
- Work with Director of Conservation and Executive Director to ensure the program remains within budgetary requirements and work with finance and development staff to ensure timely reporting to funders.
- Collaborate with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.
- At least five years of progressive program management experience, including demonstrated success developing collaborative conservation strategies and working with diverse stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in conservation biology, ecology, natural resources or similar experience required, Master's degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
- Firm grasp and understanding of ecological threats, conservation and, management issues as well as emerging issues facing coasts on a national, state and regional and/or local scale within Washington.
- Experience in avian ecology and coastal conservation, policy and public outreach.
- Demonstrated success initiating and maintaining creative partnerships with a diverse suite of interest-holders, including local officials, businesses, NGOs, government agencies, Tribes, private landowners, academic institutions and other non-profit partners.
- Good political sense, collaborative approach, and ability to reconcile different viewpoints to achieve conservation outcomes.
- Existing relationships with Washington and British Columbia coastal stakeholder groups and management agencies a plus.
- Proven leadership skills, including the ability to collaborate with and manage teams and projects ethically and in a timely manner.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus. Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information for non-technical audiences.
- Experience working with multigenerational audiences and diverse cultural communities. Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to and experience in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Demonstrated experience in grant writing and fundraising.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing complex or multiple projects through to success, including meeting financial goals, project deadlines, and coordinating the work of key staff and partners.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, and an ability to quickly learn new software programs for office operations.
- A willingness to travel in-state, occasionally out-of-state, and to work some weekends and evenings when necessary.
- An ability to communicate Audubon’s mission, goals, and programs effectively and with the highest professional standards.
- A valid driver's license required and ability to provide own transportation.
