Job Description
Position Summary:
The Senior Facilities Assistant is responsible for maintenance and care of the Rio Salado Audubon Center and our accompanying grounds, natural landscapes, nature trails, buildings, vehicles, and equipment. The Senior Facilities Assistant will assist with general administration, front desk operations, rental programs, and community events. Regular responsibilities will aim to improve the site for native plants and wildlife, and support improved community use of the facility, and promote engagement in conservation actions on site. The position will be expected to deliver work in an efficient, safe and productive manner independently and in partnership with contractors, volunteers or partner organizations. The Senior Facilities Assistant will regularly interact with diverse populations of visitors and students and will support Audubon events and activities.
This is an on-site position based at Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center at 3131 S. Central Ave in Phoenix, AZ, with a regular schedule of Tuesday through Saturday from 8am – 4pm at 40 hours per week.
Compensation
$17.50 - $19.50 / hour

Essential Functions
- Oversee facility upkeep, including but not limited to cleaning, maintenance, gardening, natural landscape management, invasive species mitigation, and plant care in accordance with local and state regulations.
- Maintain and manage wetland habitat and fish refugia in partnership with AZ Game & Fish.
- Regularly supervise & work with volunteers and partner organizations on upkeep and enhancement of outdoor green spaces including planting events, gardening, landscaping, trail maintenance, invasive species management, pond care and other facility improvement projects.
- Submit regular maintenance requests. Purchase, procure, inventory and upkeep building supplies.
- Maintain interpretive learning exhibits, art, signage, interactive displays, kiosks and community use areas. Ensure a clean and healthy environment for all staff, students, and visitors throughout the center.
- Oversee repair work, construction, painting, equipment maintenance, and routine care of Audubon vehicles as required. Use of hand tools, leaf-blowers, water pumps, water systems, power equipment will be required. Regularly provide cleaning of our solar array.
- Coordinate as needed with City of Phoenix partners or contractors to maintain functioning water, irrigation, plumbing, fire, security, and electrical systems. Arrange for outside contractors, including soliciting bids, completing contractor paperwork, supervising contractor work, approving, and submitting invoices for payment, etc.
- Assist Audubon staff with building and maintaining relationships with contractors, partners, and essential city, county and federal officials.
- Provide front desk services, guest relations, and point of sale operations. Greet and engage with visitors in a positive, welcoming attitude.
- Manage the Rio Salado phone and email and respond or forward to the necessary department.
- Assist Center Director in managing and promoting our rental and community use programs, coordinate with guests and partners.
- Host weekend or after-hours meetings, weddings, and other community events on-site.
- Assist with general facility administrative functions and basic office operations.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. An ecology degree or experience with local plant-life is a plus. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
- At least one year experience in natural landscape management, gardening or groundskeeping.
- Experience working with regional plants or natural landscapes is required.
- Must have a valid AZ driver’s license.
- Familiarity with simple repairs, cleaning or general upkeep is required.
- Bilingual in English & Spanish preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills required. Previous hospitality, sales, front desk, or guest service-related experience a plus.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Asana and Google platforms is a plus.
- Ability to work with a small team and adapt to unexpected changes in priorities in potentially stressful situations.
- Willingness to combine manual labor with administrative duties.
- Interest in nature, education, or working outdoors and collaborating with volunteers is desirable.
- Able to lift up to 60 lbs., operate various tools, machinery, equipment, and walk varying terrain with or without accommodation.
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as job demands.
