Overview:
The Exhibits Manager reports to the Director of Exhibits and Design. Working with the Director, the Exhibits Manager is responsible for the installing and maintenance of exhibitions as well as their related logistical components. Collaborating with museum staff, institutional partners, collaborators, vendors, suppliers, and others, the Exhibits Manger works with the Director of Exhibits and Graphic Design to build relationships, evaluate business needs, and establish protocols for business transactions related to. This position is also responsible for maintaining the Museum’s fabrication shop, tools and associated safety protocols. The Exhibits Technician reports directly to the Exhibits Manager.
Position Type:
This is a full-time, benefit eligible position that will work in-person at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY. The salary range for this position is $55,000-65,000. Benefits associated with this position include health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, medical/dental FSA, retirement, and paid time off (vacation, sick, holidays).
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Think strategically about the goals of the museum and its resources and develop leadership strategies to ensure successful outcomes for exhibitions and programs.
- Works with the Director of Exhibits and Graphic Design to build budgets and oversee management strategies for vendor contracts.
- Responsible for knowing and utilizing museum best practices in all areas of work.
- Responsible for the prompt resolution of issues related to the upkeep and preservation of exhibits within the museum.
- Collaborate with the museum team in developing and maintaining exhibits, which can include, but are not limited to, interactive components, artifact mounting, design, lighting, and ADA standards.
- Manage and coordinate the work of the Exhibits Technician.
- Fabricate or consult with outside contractors to construct museum displays and exhibits, mounts, artifact storage, or any other additional museum needs.
- Mount, trim, fabricate and install graphics.
- Assist in installing exhibits, including but not limited to, construction and graphics components, mounts, placement of artifacts, and other exhibit needs.
- Oversee the general maintenance of museum exhibits, including but not limited to, mounts, graphics, artifacts, interactives, and other components.
- Operate and maintain museum workshops and equipment, ensuring that spaces are clean and safe.
- Maintain proper inventory of exhibit tools and supplies, order supplies and equipment as needed.
- Oversee safety of staff, guests, and contractors around exhibition construction spaces.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies or related field. Must have 3-5 years in an exhibition design and fabrication related role. Requires 2-5 years of progressive leadership experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; be capable of carrying out complex projects with minimal supervision; work well with colleagues in a team environment.
- Ability to work in a team environment with several partners inside and outside of the museum.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Office software, experience utilizing spreadsheets, charts, and project management software.
- Knowledge and experience with CAD drawings is preferred.
- Ability to make calculations and measurements needed to advance a variety of exhibition components.
- Experience with wood, plastic, foam, and metal fabrication and hands-on problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of architectural drawings is required.
- Experience and understanding of contemporary exhibition lighting, sound technologies and other emerging and digital technologies is preferred.
- Ability to engage in occasionally strenuous activates and to work intermittently in outside elements, particularly during special programs and assisting in outside exhibition components.
- Ability to work with hand and power tools safely and ensure compliance with workplace safety standards.
- Operation of motorized equipment may be required including saws, compressors, sanders, common hand and power tools, computer, lifts, etc.
Other Job Duties:
- NBHOF Induction and Classic events are keystone events where participation, planning and execution are critical and required.
- Participates in, provides setup and support, and assists in other special events and installations as required. Flexible hours occasionally required.
