About the Role

As the Director of Development, you will play a key role in advancing our mission by expanding and sustaining a strong individual donor pipeline. Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement, this leadership position is responsible for managing mid-level donors ($1,000-$4,999 annually), overseeing annual donor portfolios, and leading non-pharma and foundational grants, corporate giving, and support event-based fundraising initiatives. This includes endurance events, third-party fundraising events, and other opportunities to drive revenue growth. The Director of Development will cultivate meaningful relationships with donors, develop innovative fundraising strategies, and lead initiatives that maximize philanthropic contributions. Additionally, this role may involve supervising staff members responsible for fundraising through events and peer-to-peer programs.

Key Responsibilities

Donor Strategy & Fundraising

  • Manage and grow NBDF’s mid-level and annual donor portfolio, ensuring meaningful engagement and long-term investment.
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term fundraising strategies, including donor cultivation, retention, and stewardship.
  • Oversee corporate, foundation, and non-pharma grant fundraising efforts to diversify revenue streams.
  • Create compelling solicitation materials, donor recognition pieces, and impact reports.
  • Develop budgets for development initiatives, ensuring alignment with financial goals.

Prospect Identification & Relationship Management

  • Cultivate relationships with individual donors, corporate partners, and foundation representatives to maximize philanthropic contributions.
  • Collaborate with the Annual Giving Manager and Donor Engagement Manager to identify and engage potential major donors.
  • Support individuals fundraising on behalf of NBDF by providing tools, guidance, and resources.
  • Develop strategy memoranda and meeting scripts to prepare senior staff to make successful asks, demonstrating an understanding of donor interests and philanthropic habits.
  • Data Management & Analytics

  • Maintain accurate donor records in CRM systems, track interactions, and ensure proper follow-ups.
  • Use data analytics to track donor engagement, giving trends, and prospect potential to optimize fundraising strategies.
  • Work with the Annual Giving Manager and Donor Engagement Manager to ensure a strong pipeline of major donor prospects through data mining and donor research.
  • Track and analyze campaign and donor engagement performance, making data-driven recommendations for improvement.
  • Leadership & Team Collaboration

  • Supervise development staff, including roles focused on events, annual giving, and donor stewardship.
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Advancement and Senior Director of Development to align fundraising strategies with broader organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., communications, programs, finance) to ensure donor messaging and materials reflect NBDF’s mission and initiatives.
  • Oversee the development initiatives of NBDF, ensuring smooth coordination of mid-level and annual giving donor management, corporate and foundation giving, and other fundraising programs.
  • What You Bring

    To qualify for this unique opportunity, our ideal candidate should have the following experience and education :

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Nonprofit Management, Business, Communications) or equivalent years of relevant experience.
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in development, focusing on major donor acquisition, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Demonstrated track record of securing major gifts through targeted donor engagement, cultivation, and solicitation strategies
  • Strong background in donor portfolio management, including identifying high-potential major donors, and ensuring long-term engagement.
  • 2 years of supervisory experience managing staff or volunteers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience with Donor Drive or a similar fundraising platform (e.g. Classy).
  • Proficiency in Raiser's Edge or a similar CRM system is required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and build relationships with donors, senior staff, and internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience drafting solicitation materials, donor communications, and reports.
  • Knowledge of and / or experience with supporting and / or fundraising for a health-based or rare disease organization is a plus.

    Where You Will Work

    This position is a remote and open to candidates located anywhere in the U.S. Applicants should be comfortable working remotely with a team dispersed across the country. This role requires some travel, typically 5-8 trips annually, which includes overnight, weekends, and to our annual Bleeding Disorders Conference.

    Salary : $1,000 - $4,999
