Program Director (Cub Scout) Job Description

Camp Description:

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the Goshen Scout Reservation is home to 5 resident (overnight) summer camps; 3 Scouts BSA (serving youth ages 11 – 18), 1 Webelos and Arrow of Light (serving youth ages 9 – 11), and 1 High Adventure Base (serving youth ages 13 – 20). Goshen Scout Reservation’s mission is to provide exceptional outdoor program opportunities for all members of the scouting community, and in doing so, will attract the very best camp staff and organize world class programs that always exceed our customer’s expectations.

The Program Director is responsible to the Camp Director for the coordination and operation of camp programs and activities in accordance with the policies and standards of Scouting America and National Capital Area Council (NCAC). They provide leadership to approximately 30-40 staff members and volunteers to provide quality programs to units, youth members, and their adult leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Exemplify the Scout Oath and Law. Support Scouting America policies and the Aims and Methods of Scouting. Strive to provide programs that are exciting, dynamic, and appealing to today’s youth; that meet the needs of youth and the units attending camp, and that are safe and fun.
  • Direct and/or coordinate operation of programs, including: 1) instructional activities (e.g. advancement programs and activities under Area Directors), 2) recreational activities (e.g., camp wide games) and 3) inspirational activities (e.g., flag ceremonies, staff campfire). Be familiar with operation of all programs and activities, including the Cub Scout program for Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts.
  • Develop and maintain a program that imparts useful knowledge that supports the aims and objectives of Scouting America that is fun, challenging, and safe.
  • Oversee the overall camp program and development of weekly and daily camp program schedules.
  • Ensure each program is presented on time with all materials on hand and ready to go for attending Scouts.
  • Inspect program materials frequently and keep the Camp Director informed of any supplies needed in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with the Camp Director on all matters. Work collaboratively with Area Directors, the Facilities Director, the Camper Experience Director, other Camp Staff, Unit Leaders, and Council Staff. Area Directors report directly to the Program Director.
  • Assist the Camp Director in coordinating and attend pre-camp planning sessions with camp staff.
  • Be familiar with Scouting America National Camp Standards for long-term resident camps, and assist the Camp Director in ensuring compliance in all applicable areas.
  • Assist Camp Director in staff hiring. Work with Camp Director and Area Directors to ensure current position descriptions are available for staff members. Enforce proper uniform use by staff.
  • Assist the Camp Director in staff training utilizing the Scouting America Camp Staff Training Manual and a written training plan in compliance with the National Camp Standards.
  • With the assistance of the Area Directors, write and submit End of Year reports, including a closing inventory, for each program area and update cmap-wide SOPs to reflect current program usage and lessons leaned.
  • Ensure all equipment is inventoried and stored properly.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Time Commitment:

  • The onsite management of camp facilities will be from June 7 - August 6, 2025, based on registration.
  • Attend and complete National Camping School Training, a week-long training course held in Spring 2025, prior to the start of the summer season.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to register as a member of the Scouting America and submit to a background check. Must complete all Youth Protection Training courses and adhere to incident reporting guidelines.
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain a “Resident Program Director certification from the National Camping School, a week-long training course, prior to the start of the summer season. Multiple locations/dates are available to choose from. The cost of training and travel/lodging will be covered by NCAC.
  • Be physically able to act quickly in emergencies, effectively communicate, and clearly understand oral and written communications.
  • Willing to complete a variety of other Scouting America trainings (included but not limited to Youth Protection Training and Weather Hazards).

Benefits:

The employee will be paid a seasonal salary starting at $550.00 per week for the duration of the summer season. All room and board that is provided is in addition to this salary. Compensation includes all pre-season preparation and post season closing reports, including all training that may be necessary for the successful execution of the position. This position is exempt from the minimum wage-maximum hours provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
