Duration : 12 month contract – 10-month school / work year schedule

FLSA : exempt / contract

Schedule : Monday through Friday (plus scheduled events)

Hours : FT (7 : 50 – 3 : 20)

Job Purpose :

St. Agnes Academy teachers educate within the high school-college preparatory academic level. They teach, inspire, advise, critique, question, and counsel to bring out the best in our Academy women.

Faith, Community, and Dominican Charism

  • Ensure that the four pillars of a Dominican education (prayer, study, community, preaching) are developed and promoted among the school community.
  • Develop an active faith community and model Christian values.
  • Support prayer and spiritual formation within the student, faculty / staff, and parent communities.
  • Uphold and implement the Dominican charism and the Houston Dominican Sisters’ congregational goals.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion by honoring the dignity of each member of the St. Agnes Academy community.

The main responsibilities will include :

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
  • Follow the faculty expectations outlined in faculty handbook.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
  • Be familiar and enforce student handbook policies.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust strategies.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Participate in department, school, and parent meetings.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and needs.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
  • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments in a timely fashion and update systems accordingly.
  • Communicate and partner with parents in a timely manner.
  • Participate in student / faculty activities (Examples include : retreats, lunch duties, faculty meetings, in-service activities).
  • Follow school emergency procedures.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary by the Department Chair, Director of Fine & Performing Arts, Academic Dean, Principal, Head of School.
  • Requirements

    Qualifications :

  • Commitment to embrace the mission of St. Agnes Academy.
  • Minimum of a four-year B.A. / B.F.A. degree in a field of study in or related to the visual arts.
  • Teaching certificate or twelve credit hours in education courses preferred.
  • Experience teaching in an independent school and / or an all-girls environment is a plus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic technology needed for teaching, learning, and communication.
  • Professional attitude, behavior, and appearance.
  • Completion of Safe Haven training.
  • Specific Academic Area Requirements :

  • Demonstrate a mastery in teaching fine art skills, specifically in drawing and painting.
  • Provide instruction to students in traditional art mediums (painting and drawing), mixed mediums, and aesthetic and conceptual decision-making.
  • Instruct students through critical analysis to make qualitative and historically relevant judgments about art.
  • Know and can apply elements of design and modern principles of art.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Organize storage areas and control the use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse and to minimize the time required for distribution and collection.
  • Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding and prepare student feedback.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and / or self-selected professional growth activities and development.
  • Align with the department’s commitment to teaching students the production of original artwork inspired by their diverse lived experiences.
  • Have a deep knowledge and understanding of art history, as well as contemporary art and its theories and practices – particularly the intersectional movements, artists, and themes that relate to social justice.
  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of artistic proficiency.
  • Teach five classes in a rotating block schedule in the Visual Arts program.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to students preparing college portfolios for application to creative degree programs.
  • Create lesson plans aligned with current trends and best practices, which drive instruction through formative assessment.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, positive studio that supports student-centered independent learning, collaboration, and choice while incorporating mutual respect.
  • Encourage student participation in external exhibitions, competitions, and opportunities for young artists.
  • Use technology / instructional media to enhance student learning experiences.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Administration.
