JOB TITLE: Special Education Teacher
DEPARTMENT: YIT School
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Education
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
- Instruct individuals and groups at appropriate developmental levels and maintain a lesson plan book clearly defining efforts to provide for individual differences.
- Establish and maintain a safe physical environment conducive to learning.
- Plan and execute enrichment experiences such as field trips.
- Write required reports/keep accurate and orderly records.
- Work effectively with other staff members in the interdisciplinary setting to address students’ needs.
- Participate effectively in Interdisciplinary Meetings, staff/teacher meetings, Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee Meetings, Planning Conferences, in-service training programs, faculty meetings.
- Provide guidance and direction to assigned Assistant Teacher, ensuring that the Assistant Teacher demonstrates a participating role within the classroom.
- Expand on; adapt current curriculum programs to meet student needs.
- Develop individualized education plans for all assigned students.
- Implement school-wide behavior management system.
- Share with other staff coverage for lunch periods, school trips and late bus duty.
- Perform other professional duties, as requested.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrate applied knowledge of curriculum and the fundamental principles of psychology and human development.
- Demonstrate familiarity with cultural patterns existing within a community that may affect the behavior of students.
- Establish relationships with students on a group and individual basis, gaining their confidence and trust and imparting a sense of security.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Physically intervene and restrain students, male and female, as necessary.
- Able to work cooperatively with others.
- Able to organize and plan the activities of Assistant Teachers, Program Aides, and 1:1 Aides.
Qualifications
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaching assistants and IEP aides present in the classroom.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Certificated by Maryland State Department of Education in special education, or in the process of having application for provisional certification reviewed by the Maryland State Department of Education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs.
- Occasional activities that require pushing, pulling, lifting up to 15-20 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Classroom setting.
- Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
