The National Civil Rights Museum, located at the historic Lorraine Motel, honors, and preserves the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. We chronicle the American civil rights movement and tell the story of the ongoing struggle for human rights. We educate and serve as a catalyst to inspire action to create positive social change.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Development Strategist identifies and qualifies new and prospective donors, executes discovery outreach and builds a prospect pool based on past donors and new prospects at $500 and above, and/or at a high estimated giving capacity. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Development, this position will be the front line of individual relational fundraising for the Museum, working especially with new and renewed prospects to retain their giving and upgrade them towards the Phoenix Circle and the portfolios of senior fundraisers. The job will include frequent calls, text, emails, visits and events.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
· Develop and implement strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of gifts at $500 and above, with a focus on identifying and upgrading prospects towards mid-level giving ($2,500 and above)
· Oversee and drive annual giving revenue goals, including retention rate increases and upgrades to the Phoenix Circle
· Regularly track and identify trends and insights which may impact annual giving goals and outcomes
· Actively manage a personal portfolio of donors with annual goals for personal visits and giving outcomes based on established metrics, using moves management methodology
· Collaborate across Development and other functional teams to identify donor prospects within the current donor file and qualify donors for upgrade to senior fundraiser portfolios
· Oversee and execute special fundraising initiatives as assigned
· Contribute to data governance and accuracy expectations by maintaining accurate donor records, interactions and moves within the Museum’s donor management system in a comprehensive timely manner
· Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of the Museum’s priorities and development objectives
· Own and support shared development team goals in driving fiscal year fundraising revenue outcomes
· Work in collaboration with other development staff and the broader Museum team in support of the Museum’s priorities and objectives
· Other duties as assigned and required to execute the overarching objectives and intent of the position
TYPICAL PHYSICAL / SOCIAL REQUIREMENTS
· May work on weekends, nights, and holidays to accommodate facility programming and utilization
· Travel, as appropriate, for donor visits, key meetings with other Museum colleagues and/or to attend conferences and other Museum-related meetings
· Requires the ability to operate general office equipment and occasionally move various office items weighing approximately 15 lbs. or less
· Must exhibit strong people skills and be comfortable interacting with the general public
· While the majority of the work is performed inside, some outdoor work is required during various Museum-related functions
· Must have a valid driver’s license and means of transportation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 3-5 years of nonprofit or political fundraising experience that includes face-to-face donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
- Familiarity with donor/constituent management systems; Raiser’s Edge a plus
- Familiarity or willingness to learn dashboard and reporting tools
- Must be comfortable with new technologies that allow for efficient office operations
- Introductory knowledge of the principles of fundraising and the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle
- Ability to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects/donors and effectively move prospects through the development cycle
· Must have strong, effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and experience communicating in a professional environment – both internally and externally with donors, board members, media, and the general public
· Understand complex verbal or written instructions; attention to detail and follow-through is essential
· Strong ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and prioritize time and projects, including multi-tasking and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously with attention to detail and sense of urgency
- Generally able to navigate a software solution for documenting the work of fundraising
- Ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
- Represent the National Civil Rights Museum in a manner that supports a positive reflection of the organization
- Collaborative, positive spirit and ability to work well cross-functionally within Development and across other teams in supporting the Museum; comfortable working in a dynamic, team environment
