Summary:
The National Communication Association (NCA) is seeking a proactive and dynamic individual to join the team as the Director of Communications and Marketing. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategic communication initiatives that enhance NCA's visibility, engagement, and membership growth. This role oversees website development, social media management, digital marketing, newsletters, branding, and membership outreach to strengthen the Association’s presence and impact.
Primary Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications & Branding
· Develop a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy aligned with the NCA’s mission and goals.
· Write, edit, and oversee the distribution of high-quality content for member emails, newsletters, press releases, and other communications.
· Ensure branding, messaging, and voice consistency across all platforms and materials.
· Update and maintain the Association style guide for internal and external use.
· Build a communications calendar to help break down silos between internal departments.
Social Media Management
· Develop and manage content calendars for social media platforms, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.
· Engage with the online community, respond to inquiries, and monitor analytics to optimize engagement.
· Create and curate compelling content, including articles, graphics, and videos.
Newsletter & Email Marketing
· Oversee the development, design, and distribution NCA’s monthly newsletter, Inside & Out.
· Analyze email engagement metrics and implement strategies to improve open rates and audience retention.
Event Promotion & Marketing
· Collaborate with the internal departments to promote NCA’s Annual Convention, Virtual Learning Opportunities, public programs, workshops, and other events.
· Create and implement marketing plans to support event attendance.
Content Creation & Management
· Oversee website content updates and enhancements to ensure accuracy, relevance, and user-friendliness.
· Develop marketing materials, including brochures, press releases, and reports.
Membership Building & Retention
· Develop targeted outreach campaigns to recruit new members and retain existing ones.
· Manage communications related to membership benefits, renewals, and engagement opportunities.
· Work closely with staff and volunteer leadership to enhance member experience and satisfaction.
Key Qualifications & Experience
· Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
· Minimum of 6-8 years of experience in communications, marketing, or a related role. Strong preference within a nonprofit, scholarly, or membership-based organization.
· Experience managing direct reports in an environment where multiple projects and tasks are due at different times throughout the year.
· Strong knowledge of social media platforms, digital marketing strategies, and email marketing tools (e.g., Constant Contact).
· Experience with content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
· Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
· Knowledge of and proficiency with various computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
· Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
· Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
· Familiarity with the Communication discipline and the academic community as a whole.
· Passion for scholarly engagement and the mission of NCA.
Reporting Structure:
The Director of Communications and Marketing reports to the Executive Director.
NCA’s Web & Digital Strategy Manager, Membership Associate, and Communications Assistant report to the Director of Communications and Marketing.
Salary Range:
$120,000 – $125,000

NCA is located at 1765 N St., NW, in the vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood in Washington, D.C. The office is Metro accessible from the Red Line (Dupont Circle Station).

Work Mode:
The National Communication Association (NCA) operates in a hybrid work mode; two days in the office and three days at telework. Staff are expected to be in the office on Tuesdays for strategic planning and other ongoing discussions with the Executive Director. The work mode is regularly reviewed to meet the evolving needs of the association. Such review may necessitate changing a position’s mode of work designation.
