Scholar in Residence

The Scholar in Residence position will provide the candidate with valuable nursing regulatory/policy experience related to education, practice, licensure, policy, research and/or discipline depending on both the applicant’s primary area of interest and NCSBN’s organizational objectives. One applicant annually will be selected for this eight-week program to learn from experts in nursing regulation and to participate in a project related to their interests and to nursing regulation, under the guidance of NCSBN’s Policy, Education & Research division staff. 


Who Should Apply

Doctoral candidates (either those that are in the latter stages of their program or applicants with a doctorate who are working in a relevant field) or faculty.


Duration

The 2025 summer program will last eight weeks, beginning June 30, 2025, and ending August 22, 2025. (The eight-week program window can be adjusted for the convenience of the Scholar in Residence with prior approval from NCSBN.)
 

Location 
The Scholar in Residence will be expected to reside in Illinois during the program. Participants will work a hybrid schedule including on-site work at the NCSBN office in downtown Chicago, IL and remote work from their Illinois residence. 

 

Financial Support 

This program awards a stipend paid in semi-monthly increments of $1,750, which is equivalent to $7,000 throughout the 8-week program period. Individuals who reside outside of Illinois are eligible for an additional $3,000 relocation/housing allowance to relocate to IL for the full term of the program. Travel expenses associated with commuting to and from the NCSBN office during the program are not reimbursable.

Required information for a complete application:

  • A cover letter describing your interest in nursing regulation and your experience related to nursing regulation. Please include: 1) regulation/policy/research interests, 2) what you would like to achieve through the position, 3) previous experience relevant to the position, 4) identification of a potential project that would be mutually beneficial to you and NCSBN.
  • A resume or curriculum vitae (include any honors, awards, and any other relevant accomplishments).
  • Two letters of recommendation preferably from individuals having direct knowledge of your nursing regulation interests and abilities.
