Position Details :
POSITION EMPHASIS : This position supports the National Education Association's (NEA) strategic objective to enhance organizational capacity through a focus on leadership development as a strategy to advance the mission of the NEA and its affiliates. This position advances the organization's strategy for leadership development, centered on the NEA Leadership Competency Framework through the creation and execution of a strategic communications plan to amplify the leadership development strategy and strengthen the leadership development brand. Additionally, this position is key in creating and maintaining relationships with state affiliate communicators, providing logistical support, and serving as the communications lead for the annual NEA National Leadership Summit.
POSITION SUMMARY : The primary responsibilities of this position include expertise in creating and executing a robust and strategic communications plan to advance the organization's leadership development strategy. Essential functions include print marketing, public relations, and social and digital media. Additionally, the incumbent will need to have the ability to co-create and plan large-scale training experiences. Additional functions include applying the principles of andragogy to create and deliver virtual and in-person learning opportunities across multiple modalities e.g. instructor-led, asynchronous, hybrid, etc. To carry out responsibilities, the incumbent uses high-level writing, speaking, training, and interpersonal skills. In addition, the incumbent uses personal computers, associated software, and other office technology and travels occasionally. This position is in the Center for Governance, reporting to the Associate Director, Leadership Development
This position is a DC-based position with NEA's headquarters building serving as the central workplace. Individuals who are hired for certain positions may request approval for telework in accordance with the policies and guidelines for the staff unit to which the position is assigned. MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : A Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Communication, Education, Adult Education, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Five years of professional experience in conceptualizing, developing, and delivering a communications plan. Experience must involve analysis and evaluation of programs and communications data to inform leadership strategy as well as the development of new learning experiences. Writing, editing, public speaking, instruction, and group facilitation. Experience developing presentations and trainings. OTHER REQUIREMENTS : Analytical ability, sound judgment, a member-oriented approach, a high degree of organization, self-directedness, and a commitment to continuous learning. Samples of work products (i.e., writing, presentation handouts, press releases, communication plans, training materials, etc.) may be required at the time of the interview. Occasional travel required.
SELECTION CRITERIA : TIER 1 (Essential) : Expertise and experience in mass communications. Demonstrated understanding of broadcast, print, and digital media. Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated effectiveness in creating a leadership development strategy to advance organizational priorities. Demonstrated experience working on multiple projects under stringent timeframes and changing priorities / conditions. Skill in working independently and within collaborative, cross-departmental teams. Ability to partner with internal leaders and external vendors. Successful references. TIER 2 (Significant) : Understanding of multiple modalities for delivering training / learning and planning large-scale training experiences. Experience training / facilitating groups of various sizes. Familiarity with popular training approaches. Experience using assessment tools, resources, and competency models. Familiarity with issues related to systems thinking, adult learning, leadership development, and unions, as well as familiarity with issues, trends, and needs of NEA leaders and members at multiple levels. Proven ability to work collaboratively and creatively toward organizational goals. Ability to lead and / or conduct research to support leaders' decision-making capabilities. TIER 3 (Desirable) : Knowledge of the Center for Governance's mission and strategic focus. Experience engaging elected Board and Executive Committee members. Experience working with NEA State Affiliates, Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Secretary-Treasurers.
