Major Duties and Responsibilities

The Community Resource Coordinator will focus their service on providing community-based resources, including, but not limited to mental health resources, public health resources, information on government benefits, and nutrition and healthy eating among others. This position will also be asked to facilitate smaller community-based distributions where they will ensure partnerships in known food deserts across the state to reach new demographics/socio-economic populations.

The NHC mission is “to foster healthy communities by connecting those who need it most with health and wellness education, benefits and services, while developing tomorrow’s compassionate health leaders.” The Community Resource Coordinator will serve directly with the community in this position. According to Feeding America, “in Delaware, 93,900 people are struggling with hunger - and of them 30,920 are children.” In addition, according to the Map the Meal Gap from Feeding America, the food insecurity rate in New Castle County is 10.1% according to 2020 data. That number has increased in the years since published and has also been adversely impacted by COVID-19. As outlined in the NHC mission, all of the individuals experiencing food insecurity would be benefitted from greater access to “health and wellness education, benefits and services.”

As outlined, the Community Resource Coordinator will provide service in underrepresented communities, among others, encouraging involvement in an information sharing of food security resources and health related materials.

The majority of the responsibilities of the Community Engagement Coordinator will be conducted on-site and, in the field, serving communities.

The Community Resource Coordinator, as an AmeriCorps Member, will be expected to serve forty (40) hours per week and the standard service week is five days. The administrative offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Also, the standard service day is “8 hours as determined by the supervisor.” Holidays and time off would be extended to the NHC Member, with approval from the Food Distribution Director at the FBD and the program staff. The schedule for the NHC member may require service outside of the normal hours, which could be used to offset time off. This would be determined in consultation with the Food Distribution Director. Flexible hours/service formats, due to childcare commitments, probation/parole requirements or other obligations, will have to be discussed with the FBD to determine if they could be accommodated. Time away from site for activities required by the NHC Program, such as meetings and trainings will also be accommodated once discussed with the FBD Site Supervisor. The Food Bank of Delaware anticipates that a majority of the member’s weekly schedule would be spent doing meaningful service.

Criminal History Check Requirements Beyond NHC Standard Checks

The member understands that if the results of the required criminal history checks reveal that they are subject to a state sex offender registration requirement and/or have been convicted of homicide (1st, 2nd or 3rd degree) they will be ineligible to serve in the Program. The member also understands they will have the opportunity to review and dispute the findings from the criminal history check.
