ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
National Housing Trust (NHT) has been dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing for almost 40 years. We build, preserve, and finance affordable housing and use that expertise to inform and advance resident-focused solutions to strengthen the broader affordable housing industry.
NHT owns and operates Washington View Apartments located at 2629 Douglass Road SE. As part of our commitment to residents, NHT is working with Building Bridges Across the River and the Collaboration for Equitable Health to launch a multi-year project to address the social determinants of health East of the River. The project is called ViewStrong.
ABOUT ViewStrong, Powered by the Interrupt
ViewStrong, power by the Interrupt is excited to bring a food pantry to Washington View. The food pantry is located across from the community laundry facility and is open to all residents. The food pantry will maintain a stock of groceries at no cost to residents.
POSITION
We are seeking a Washington View resident to serve as a Food Pantry Youth Apprentice. This is a contract position that will begin in April. The Food Pantry Youth Apprentice will assist the Food Pantry Coordinator in the operations of our small community food pantry and will work closely with staff from NHT, Building Bridges Across the River, Black Nurses Rock, and So What Else. This position will be contracted by NHT.
This position is DC-based. Due to the nature of the work, this position offers no remote work options. This position requires approximately 11 hours weekly, including all distribution days and preparation time.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage inventory
- Schedule and supervise volunteers during operating hours
- Coordinate with NHT on food deliveries and restocking
- Maintain pantry organization and cleanliness standards
- Process client intake and maintain confidential records
- Monitor expiration dates and food safety compliance
- Identify and address specific community nutritional needs
- Coordinate special holiday or seasonal distribution events
Candidates must be comfortable with:
- Lifting heavy items
- Stooping, kneeling, and standing while managing inventory and distributions
- Hand deliveries to households with mobility challenges
- Taking instruction from staff of Building Bridges Across the River, WC Smith and National Housing Trust, regarding how to conduct the work and store the supplies.

COMPENSATION
This is a contract position that will be paid $22.50 per hour.
