POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) serves as the top executive, providing visionary leadership and strategic direction for the organization and serves as the primary. The CEO is responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient execution of NIHB's mission, which is to improve the health status and quality of life for American Indians and Alaska Natives. The CEO represents NIHB in all external matters, including public relations, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement.
The CEO reports to the Board of Directors and is accountable for the overall performance and success of the organization.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Serve as the primary representative and spokesperson for NIHB, advocating for Tribal health priorities at local, state, and federal levels.
- Carry out the mission of NIHB with integrity, dedication, and a commitment to protecting NIHB’s image and reputation.
- Maintain strong relationships with Area Health Boards and member organizations to ensure that NIHB’s initiatives and advocacy align with the needs and priorities of Tribal Nations.
- Set the strategic direction for the organization.
- Ensure alignment of all organizational activities with the strategic plan and mission.
- Foster partnerships and collaborations with Tribal Nations, policymakers, governmental agencies, and private entities to further NIHB’s mission at the direction of the Board of Directors.
- Work closely with the Government Relations Director to identify and analyze existing
and emerging policies, propose advocacy opportunities, and ensure alignment with.
Financial Management & Oversight
Provide strategic oversight of NIHB’s financial health, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and goals.Review and approve key financial decisions, including budgets, audits, and major disbursements, as appropriateCollaborate with Financial Director to ensure compliance with all financial regulations and accounting standards.Monitor financial performance and identify areas for improvement.Present a comprehensive financial report to the Board on a quarterly basis.Develop and implement strategic plans to secure diverse funding sources, including federal grants and private partnerships.Lead efforts to identify, pursue, and secure grants, sponsorships, and partnerships that align with Tribal health priorities and organizational goals.Operational Oversight
Provide final approval on major operational, financial, and programmatic decisions to ensure alignment with NIHB’s mission and strategic priorities.Empower the Senior Management Team to manage day-to-day operations, ensuring effective execution of programs and initiatives.Oversee the planning and successful execution of NIHB’s Annual Conferences and other major organizational events.Review and approve high-level contractual agreements, vendor relationships, and strategic partnerships.Utilize data-driven decision-making to evaluate organizational performance and ensure continuous improvement.Personnel Management
Collaborate with HR to ensure the development and implementation of equitable and culturally competent personnel policies and practices.Hire, supervise, and terminate senior staff in alignment with organizational goals and in consultation with senior leadership for key hiring decisions.Conduct periodic performance evaluations for senior management and provide leadership development opportunities.Oversee recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies to build a mission-driven and effective workforce.Assure the confidentiality of personnel files and compliance with all employment laws.Foster an inclusive organizational culture that supports diversity, equity, and the values of Tribal Nations.Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
REQUIREMENTS.
Advanced degree in Public Health, Business Administration, Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, or a related field preferred with at least 5 years of senior leadership experience in Tribal entities, such as Tribal health or Tribal nonprofit organizations that serve federally recognized tribes.Demonstrated experience and understanding of Tribal communities, with commitment to advancing equity, cultural awareness and Tribal sovereignty.Proven expertise in financial management, including oversight of large-scale grants, particularly those from federal entities, and a proven track record in strategic development to drive organizational growth and secure funding.Excellent oral, written, and time management skills.Ability to analyze and summarize complex legislative and regulatory information.Strong organizational leadership and staff development skills.Ability to handle stress and multi-task in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines.Proficient with Outlook 365, and any other systems useful or required for the role.Equal Opportunity Employer : NIHB is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of color, race, religion, national origin, political affiliation, marital status, disability (physical or mental), age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, genetic information, status as a parent, membership or non-membership in an employee organization, veteran status, or any other non-merit factor.
