Staff Attorney (Contract to Hire)

Midtown Manhattan – Corporate Office

A respected nonprofit organization is seeking a dedicated Staff Attorney to join its Midtown corporate office. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity for someone passionate about public interest law and serving vulnerable communities across New York City.

The program provides essential legal representation to individuals who are seriously and persistently mentally ill, homeless or formerly homeless, or at risk of eviction. The organization is appointed to act in these matters when no family or friends are available to serve.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide legal counsel on matters involving public benefits, entitlements, and housing rights
• Represent clients in Article 81 Guardianship proceedings and landlord-tenant disputes
• Litigate and manage cases independently, including court appearances and motion practice
• Work collaboratively with social workers, case managers, and other legal staff
• Advocate for the rights and needs of clients facing complex challenges
  
  

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
• Admission to practice law in New York State
• Minimum 3 years of litigation experience (preferably in guardianship or housing law)
• Experience with or strong commitment to serving diverse and underserved populations
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest law
  
  

Preferred Experience

• Familiarity with Article 81 Guardianship matters
• Landlord-tenant law and proceedings
• Knowledge of public benefits systems and entitlements
  
  

Compensation: $45 - $50/hour | Contract-to-Hire | $85,000–$95,000 annually, commensurate with experience
