JOB DESCRIPTION: DECKHAND/MATE
Job Summary:
A DECKHAND/MATE, under the direction of the Master, will perform any combination of the following duties: Handle lines at docks, and on barges at locks; rig towing wires; sweep decks using a broom; stand lookout watches while the motor vessel is underway; carry materials and supplies from docks or other vessels; prepare and paint decks and superstructure of the motor vessel using a chipper, scraper, sander, paint roller and brush; lubricate machinery and equipment; splice and repair wire cables and ropes using hand tools; examine cables that hold barges and motor vessel in tow; use a ratchet; tighten cables to ensure barges and vessel are snug; check barges and barge void tanks for leakage.
Essential Functions and Accountability:
1. A DECKHAND/MATE must know, follow and carry out all company safety rules, procedures and policies as stated in the Employee Handbook, Safety Manual and the Responsible Carrier Program Manuals.
2. A DECKHAND/MATE must be responsible for personal safety and the safety of fellow crew members at all times and to report immediately to the mate all safety hazards and dangerous conditions which might be encountered on the motor vessel or the tow.
3. A DECKHAND/MATE must be responsible for observing all rules of conduct and standards of work, written and unwritten, prescribed by McNational.
4. A DECKHAND/MATE must keep the motor vessel, at all times, clean, orderly and in good repair. This includes painting and keeping all rigging in good working order.
5. A DECKHAND/MATE must keep clean and neat the entire motor vessel.
6. A DECKHAND/MATE must observe the motor vessel chain of command at all times; to follow all orders and instructions in keeping with the intention of orders and instructions. The chain of command is Master to Mate (if so manned) to Deckhand.
7. A DECKHAND/MATE must perform all duties and assignments as directed by the Master.
8. A DECKHAND/MATE must apply oneself to all assigned tasks in order to obtain the necessary knowledge and experience to enhance job advancement and to attain United States Coast Guard licenses and certificates if possible.
9. A DECKHAND/MATE must participate as requested by the Master in the Vessel meetings.
Job Qualifications:
Valid driver’s license is preferred. High School diploma (or equivalent) so as to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and deal with problems involving vessel maintenance and tow-building. Previous towboat experience is not a requirement for employment; however, deckhand training through a qualified facility is preferable for inexperienced candidates. Inexperienced applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team member and must be able to follow instructions.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demand for this position is classified as a medium to heavy level. The employee will have exposure to material handling, which will involve: lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying. The heavy, physical nature of the work of a deckhand requires that this individual have the ability to concentrate on each assigned task so as to perform the task in a safe and efficient manner. The deckhand must remain alert at all times while serving on watch. All individuals must maintain good personal hygiene at all times.
Working Conditions:
Nearly all of the physically demanding work of the deckhand is performed outside either on the deck of the motor vessel or on barges in tow, day or night, during all seasons of the year, in all conditions of weather, including weather extremes of heat and cold. The deckhand will, from time to time, have to work in small, confined spaces such as barge wing tanks.
Equipment Used:
In the performance of his/her duties, the deckhand will use a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, barge pumps, running lights, ratchets, cheater bars, sledge hammers, toothpicks, fids, towing wires, straps, chains, lines, deck crawlers, needle scalers, grinders, boat and barge fittings such as, timberheads, spools, cavels, and buttons, safety equipment including work vest and safety (steel toed) boots, a billed cap, work gloves, safety goggles, line knives, flashlights or other personal lighting systems, mops, brushes, hoses, boat and barge winches.
