The Director of Education & Programs works collaboratively with Museum leadership to fulfill the educational mission of the National Museum of African American Music. This is accomplished through creative educational programming and engagement with guests, students, stakeholders, supporters and the community of Nashville and middle Tennessee. The Director of Education & Programs provides direction and support for the education department daily operations, administrative functions, and staff to fulfill the Museum’s objectives.
The incumbent should be innovative in the approach to engaging learners and community partners of all ages, as well as experienced in launching new educational initiatives. Must be energetic and able to work in a fast-paced team environment while embracing creativity and functionality on an individual basis. Strong and resourceful problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills are crucial. Proven ability to work well within deadlines on multiple and varied projects simultaneously.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the exhibitions and education staff, develops programs designed to bridge museum collections, exhibitions, and interpretive programs with academic programs for schools (k-12 and universities) and the public.
- Plan and facilitate education programs and manage the Museum calendar.
- Plan with department and communicate to marketing, educational needs based on upcoming programs and initiatives.
- Work to manage and develop staff, students, and volunteers in the daily education department functions of the museum.
- Collect, assess, and report information to evaluate activities, programs, and practices.
- Track budgets and grant requirements.
- Conduct research and collaborate with museum staff in the development of material to provide information and education to museum patrons.
- Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or museum studies with an emphasis on history, cultural studies, or related social sciences.
- Five (5) years of experience working with history or STEM education or public programs in a museum or related non-profit environment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge and experience with K-12 curriculum-based education.
- Understanding of current museum and informal educational practices, as well as visitor studies.
- Experience working with students across a broad range of demographics.
- Proficiency in educational grant writing.
- Demonstrated success creating or implementing learning resources in a digital environment.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be willing to travel on occasion.
- Exemplary oral and written communication skills
- Ability to envision and execute numerous projects simultaneously.
- Well-developed relationships and expansive network with diverse contemporary artists, especially emerging and mid-career artists
- Advanced knowledge of and engagement with contemporary art and relevant learning theories, acquired through study and practice.
- Demonstrated experience with one or more research methodologies, including qualitative, quantitative, and/or normative methods.
- Demonstrated success in managing, mentoring, and collaborating with staff members to create mission-aligned, impactful learning opportunities.
- Demonstrated success in managing programs characterized by mutually respectful communication and attentive engagement with groups of diverse ages, backgrounds, experiences, and identities.
All Staff Duties:
- Serves as leader to assure strong communications between NMAAM and all external constituents.
- Actively seeks to learn the history of NMAAM.
- Supports and promotes the museum’s mission.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of special events.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
