Position Summary
The Veteran Center Coordinator, under the direction of the Veteran Center Associate Director, provides critical assistance and training to veteran students related to GI Bill funding, military transition counseling, and project/event coordination. Serves as the subject matter expert in the Veteran Center on these, and other, issues related to military transition to University life. Supports the Veteran’s Affairs and various other departments, providing guidance,and information as necessary.

Travel: Some Travel Required – about 10%, primarily in San Diego, California and the Southern California region, and to conferences related to serving military and veteran students.
Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies. Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency. Essential Functions:
- Respond to student questions related to disability services.
- Assist the Associate Director with day-to-day Veteran Center operations.
- Act as student veteran advocate for issues related to student veteran educational benefits and academic challenges/concerns, collaborating with internal stakeholders to empower student success and problem resolution.
- Plan and implement successful Interdepartmental outreach efforts with other student services departments.
- Develop, implement, and maintain student veteran educational benefits training and will provide this training to all newly enrolled student veterans and admissions advisors University-wide on an ongoing basis.
- Coordinate Quarterly Welcome Aboard Orientation Events, First Week Jam events, and other recurring/standalone Veteran Center events
- Serve as first point of contact and subject matter expert for all student veteran related inquires/concerns
- Provide military cultural awareness information and training to staff and faculty University-wide.
- Collaborate with student services departments in creating and implementing student veteran success programs
- Coordinate and facilitate Veteran Center outreach efforts (First Week Jam events, classroom visits, etc.)
- Participate in ongoing department projects, or other special projects, as needed.
- Reasonable and consistent attendance to fulfill requirements of the position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Preferably in the following areas: psychology, social work, communications, and/or related helping profession degrees.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience with veterans and/or military personnel required.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in higher education within Student Services, Student Affairs, Academic Advising, or related student-facing position required.
- Military service preferred.
- Experience in higher education preferred.
- Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.
- All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications.
- Ability to understand and empathize with the challenges associated with military service.
- Demonstrated knowledge and involvement with military support services available to service members and their families.
- Excellent public speaking and interpersonal communication skills.
- A proven history of referring military community members to appropriate services when appropriate.
- Ability to develop rapport with non-traditional students.
- Possess strong organizational and follow-through skills.
- Possess administrative skills to facilitate operations.
- Established problem-solving abilities and resource application.
- Must feel comfortable working with a team and individually.
- Works well with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to travel (including some air travel).
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
- Training and experience counseling students in military and veteran educational benefits.
- Training and experience counseling students in military and veteran medical/social service benefits.
- Frequently sit; talk; use hands to type, handle, feel or operate tools or controls; reach with hands and arms.
- The employee will occasionally walk and must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to twenty-five (20) lbs.
