Job Title: Lead Underground Fiber Plow Operator
Location: Lynchburg VA
Job Type: Fiber Construction. ($28-$34 per hour)
Job Summary:
The Lead Underground Fiber Plow Operator will be responsible for leading the team in the safe and efficient installation of underground fiber optic cables using fiber plowing equipment. The role involves supervising crew members, maintaining equipment, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and according to safety standards and local regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Operation: Operate and lead a team using fiber plowing equipment to install underground fiber optic cables. Ensure the crew is following safety protocols and the work is completed on schedule.
- Crew Supervision: Supervise and direct a crew of fiber optic installers and operators. Provide guidance and training to ensure high standards of performance and safety.
- Project Management: Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and other team members to plan the scope of work, review blueprints, and schedule work based on project timelines.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on fiber plowing equipment, ensuring all machinery is in good working order. Report any major equipment malfunctions to management.
- Site Safety: Monitor worksite conditions and ensure that safety procedures are being followed at all times, including wearing appropriate protective gear and adhering to OSHA standards.
- Quality Control: Ensure that all fiber optic cables are installed correctly and according to specifications. Conduct post-installation inspections to confirm cable placement and depth.
- Record Keeping: Keep detailed logs of daily activities, equipment usage, and any issues that arise on the job site. Report progress to supervisors and stakeholders.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other contractors, vendors, and local authorities to ensure the successful completion of fiber installation projects.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience operating fiber plowing equipment (e.g., Vermeer, Ditch Witch).
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to supervise and motivate a team.
- Knowledge of underground fiber optic installation methods and safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and project plans.
- Excellent problem-solving skills to address challenges in real-time during installations.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on equipment.
- Physical stamina to handle the demands of outdoor work and lifting heavy materials.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- OSHA certification or similar safety certifications preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in fiber optic construction or telecommunications.
- Knowledge of GPS or mapping systems for fiber placement.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment, tools, and materials.
- Long hours, including weekends or on-call availability, depending on project deadlines.
