Communications and Special Projects Section Chief

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by advancing the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities. As an employee of the Communications, Food, and Vendor Policy Branch, the incumbent serves as part of a team that monitors, improves, and implements local and statewide policies which protect and serve Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) participants, vendors, and local agencies.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Chief, Communications, Food, and Vendor Policy Branch, Staff Services Manager (SSM) III. The SSM II is responsible for the overall management, coordination, and integration of communications, outreach, and strategic planning activities for the WIC Division. The SSM II develops WIC’s internal and external communications and outreach strategies, including developing and managing materials. Performance of these duties involves interaction with a broad range of division chiefs, specialized program managers, and external constituencies representing a range of WIC interests.

The SSM II will also be responsible for coordinating with other units to ensure efforts relating to data sharing, policy development, and health education are widely disseminated to a variety of stakeholder groups. Provides direct supervision to one SSM I, one Health Program Manager I, direct supervision to three Health Program Specialist I’s, and indirect supervision to seven professional staff. The manager actively participates as a member of the WIC Division Management Team.
