Job position description:
We’re looking for a full-time Clinical Laboratory Scientist who will analyze various biological specimens and will be responsible for testing samples and reporting results to physicians. The clinical laboratory scientist performs testing in different departments of the clinical lab, such as hematology, chemistry, and toxicology.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The clinical laboratory scientist is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory. Essential functions include:
- Accessible to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed.
- Selection of test methods appropriate for clinical inclusion of results.
- Establishment of method verification procedures adequate to determine accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of each test method.
- Ensuring that the laboratory is enrolled in an HHS-approved proficiency testing program that includes all testing performed in the laboratory.
- Ensure the laboratory’s proficiency testing performance is evaluated and the appropriate personnel identifies necessary corrective action.
- Establish a quality control program that includes parameters for acceptable performance.
- Establish an acceptable level of analytical performance for all laboratory testing, including the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases.
- Ensure that significant deviations from the laboratory’s established performance specifications are identified, necessary remedial actions are initiated and documented, and patient test results are only reported when the system functions correctly.
- Identify staff training needs and ensure regular in-service training and education for staff.
- Evaluation of the performance of each staff person semi-annually from the date of employment and thereafter, on an annual basis, and when new systems or methods are introduced for testing.
- Assessment of staff competency to adequately perform all phases of assigned laboratory activities, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical duties.
This may include:
o As applicable, direct observation of the test performances, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical activities.
o Monitoring the reporting of test results.
o Reviewing worksheets, logs, quality control results, proficiency testing results, and maintenance records.
o Assessment of test performance by utilizing previously analyzed samples, proficiency testing samples, or internal blind testing samples.
o Assessment of problem-solving skills.

Qualifications/Experience/Educations:
Education
The clinical laboratory scientist must have one of the following for education:
- Qualified as a Laboratory Director by one of the following criteria:
Is a licensed MD, DO, or DPM and possesses a current license to practice in this state AND
a. Board-certified in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology, OR
b. Has one year of lab training or experience in the specialty of non-waived testing in the areas of laboratory service of responsibility
OR
2.Possess a doctoral or master’s degree in laboratory science and have at least one year of lab training or experience in the specialty of non-waived testing in the areas of laboratory service of responsibility.
OR
3.Possess a bachelor’s degree in laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution and have at least four (4) years of laboratory training or experience in the specialty of non-waived testing in the area of laboratory service of responsibility. The training or experience requirements may be acquired concurrently for multiple specialties.
Certifications and Licensure
·ASCP, AMT, or equivalent will be considered.
·Current Montana State Licensure or eligible for Montana State Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS).
Qualifications
- Experience with laboratory information systems.
- Experience in relevant areas of the clinical laboratory.
- Experience in Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills using email, telephone, and in person.
